An Original Vintage Linenbacked World War I Poster (measures 20" x 28 1/4" [51 x 72 cm]) (Learn More) Go Over the Top With U.S. Marines, the 1917 U.S. World War I (WWI) recruitment poster encouraging enlistment in the U.S. Marine Corp, and featuring John A. Coughlin art of a charging soldier with a heavy machine gun with more Marines in the background with the American flag. Note that the U.S. Marine Corps was founded in 1775 as the "fighting branch" of the U.S. Navy. Most people think of the Marines are a completely separate branch of the military, but actually, they are still closely tied to the Navy (although many Marines don't like to think about that)! Artist: John A. Coughlin Overall Condition and Pre-Restoration Defects with Quality of Restoration: good to very good. The poster was never folded. It had some tears and areas of paper loss in the right border, slightly extending into the bottom right corner of the image. There were some surface scuffs in the bottom of the right edge of the image and in the right of the bottom edge of the image. Overall, the poster was in good to very good condition prior to linenbacking. The poster was pretty well backed, but you can see signs of the above defects and the restoration of the above defects.
