Appears in Vintage Hollywood Posters 8 CATALOG SOLD OUT The image at right appears in the auction catalog we published as shown above and was sold long ago and we do NOT have it available for purchase. An Original Vintage Theatrical Folded One-Sheet Movie Poster (measures 27" x 41") (Learn More) The Ghost Ship, the 1943 Mark Robson high seas murder mystery horror thriller ("Story by Leo Mittler"; produced by Val Lewton) starring Richard Dix, Russell Wade, Edith Barrett, Ben Bard, Edmund Glover, Skelton Knaggs (who played a mute but his character narrates the film with an internal voice-over monologue), Lawrence Tierney (uncredited in his third movie role!), and Dewey Robinson. Note that shortly after its theatrical release, producer Val Lewton was sued for plagiarism by a man who said he had sent a script with the same plot to Lewton. Lewton could have settled out of court, but he claimed he never even opened the script, and he decided to fight the case. That proved to be a massive error, because the court ruled against Lewton and The Ghost Ship was withdrawn from circulation, and was unavailable for viewing for the next 50 years, and when it was finally made available, it was ruled to be public domain, so Lewton never received any financial reward from it. NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. If you know who did the art (if any), please let us know. Important Added Info: Note that this poster has an NSS number of "49/398" in the lower right corner. No one has ever seen a "Ghost Ship" one-sheet with a 1943 NSS number, and therefore the consensus opinion of all experts is that the 1949 NSS number is a misprint! THEREFORE, THE POSTER WE ARE SELLING IS AN ORIGINAL FIRST RELEASE 1943 GHOST SHIP, NOT a re-release. Please do not bid on this poster thinking it is a 1949 re-release, as it is a 1943 first release one-sheet! Condition: good to very good. the poster was water stained at the top crossfold and at the bottom crossfold and each stain radiates out to the left and right and to the top and bottom in kind of a star shape, but with four points; each stain is large (as seen from the back of the poster), but because so much of the front of the poster is dark, it is mostly only seen in the front in the white letters of the title that fall by the top crossfold; there was paper loss at the top two crossfolds and someone put a small piece of paper behind each one and then put scotch tape over the paper to hold it in place; there was a hole at the top of the "H" of "GHOST" in the title and someone put a piece of paper behind it and taped it in place (all three of those areas had some amateur touch up in the front of the poster to correct the missing paper area, but the tape that was on the back has somewhat bled through); there were many pinholes in the top corners and a clean 2" tear in the top left corner extending into the black background area; the extreme edge of the right border is somewhat tattered and there is a piece of tape on the left end of the middle crossfold; there is a tiny stain in the top center of the poster in the black background below the "D" of "RICHARD". The poster is in better condition than the above makes it sound! It is an ideal candidate for linenbacking. An expert restorer can relatively easily repair this poster's many minor defects (and likely remove most or all of the water staining through chemical means), and after the restoration is complete, it will look quite nice, and there truly will be little paint restoration anywhere on it.
