An Original Vintage Movie Script (measures 8 1/2" x 11" [22 x 28 cm], 117 pages) (Learn More)

Gangs of New York, the 2002 Martin Scorsese (nominated for Best Director Academy Award) Italian/U.S. historical New York City crime family relationship romantic epic melodrama (nominated for the Best Picture Academy Award; "America Was Born In The Streets."; loosely based on the 1927 book "The Gangs of New York" by Herbert Asbury; about New York City during the middle 19th century, and about Irish gangs and corrupt politicians) starring Leonardo DiCaprio, Daniel Day-Lewis (nominated for the Best Actor Academy Award for this film; as Bill "The Butcher" Cutting), Cameron Diaz, Jim Broadbent (as "Boss" Tweed), John C. Reilly, Henry Thomas, Brendan Gleeson, and Liam Neeson. Note that this was a dream project for Martin Scorsese. He wanted to film it in the late 1970s, but the epic failure of "Heaven's Gate" meant that no studio would consider it. He finally got the financing for it in 2001, and the movie was scheduled to be opened on Christmas Day 2001, but Scorsese was not done filming in time. That created a giant problem, because he wanted to move it back to Christmas Day 2002, but DiCaprio had another movie, "Catch Me If You Can", opening then, and the studios were afraid to open both movies on the same day. Ultimately, it opened on December 20, 2002, almost a full year after it had been scheduled to first open.

Important Added Info: Note that this script is the revised draft from June 28, 2002 and the screenplay was written by Jay Cocks, Steven Zaillan, and Kenneth Lonergan. Studios would send examples of their scripts to screenwriters who were members of the Motion Picture Academy, so that they would be more likely to vote for that screenplay to be nominated for the "Best Screenplay" Oscar. They would send actual photocopies of the scripts. They often say "FOR YOUR CONSIDERATION" on the front cover or on the title page. In the case of this script, "FOR YOUR CONSIDERATION" does not appear anywhere on this script (but we still think this script was sent by the studio to the screenwriting members of the Motion Picture Academy, and perhaps there was a separate cover letter with it explaining that, but if so, we don't have the cover letter). Note that this script was consigned to us directly from director/screenwriter Charles Shyer. Mr. Shyer is the director of many extremely popular movies from the 1970s to the present, many of which are romantic comedies, including House Calls, Private Benjamin, Baby Boom, remakes of Father of the Bride and The Parent Trap, and many others. Over the years, he collected scripts, which he received primarily in two different ways. He was friends with screenwriters, directors, and producers during those years, and they would sometimes send him scripts of their movies to get his opinion of them, and many of those are offered here. In addition, as a member of the screenwriter's branch of the Academy, he was sent many scripts where the producers hoped that their script would be nominated for a Best Screenwriting Academy Award, and many of these have "for your consideration" printed on the cover. This is a rare opportunity to purchase original scripts that come directly from the personal collection of a prominent director/screenwriter!

Condition: very good. Note that we have photographed the cover of the script, the title page, the final page of the script (the one that reads "THE END"), and one or more interior pages. These images will not only provide important information about the script, but they also allow you to closely judge the condition of the script. The script is 100% complete!
