An Original Vintage Theatrical Movie Insert (Learn More) The Return of Sherlock Holmes, the 1929 Basil Dean Scotland Yard England detective mystery crime thriller ("All talking!"; "A new adventure of Sherlock Holmes by Basil Dean and Garrett Ford"; "Based upon a short story by Sir A. Conan Doyle") starring Clive Brook (in the title role as Sherlock Holmes), H. Reeves-Smith (as Dr. Watson), Betty Lawford, Charles Hay, and Phillips Holmes. Note that this was Clive Brook's first appearance as Sherlock Holmes (the "return of" in the title referred to the character, who had been played in several silent movies). He would play the character one more time in "Sherlock Holmes" in 1932, with Reginald Owen as Dr. Watson. A year later, World Wide Pictures made A Study in Scarlet, and perhaps in a money saving measure, they hired Reginald Owen to play Sherlock Holmes, and Clive Brook would never play him again!
