An Original Vintage Theatrical 8" x 10 1/4" [20 x 26 cm] Still (Learn More) Harry Jolson was an American singer and vaudeville performer from the 1900s to the 1930s. You may have never heard of him, but you surely know his younger brother, Al! Harry was three years older than Al, and he claimed that the basic story of The Jazz Singer was very distorted, cutting him and his sisters out of Al's life, and that it was Harry who incurred the wrath of their cantor father when he went into show business as a teenager. He says that several years later, Al asked to join his act, and he agreed, and the two brothers teamed with Joe Palmer to form "Jolson, Palmer and Jolson" in the very early 1900s, and that it was Palmer (who had a southern accent) who suggested that Al start wearing blackface in their act. But soon after they started performing, Harry became ill, and Al and Joe Palmer dropped him from their act, and for the rest of Harry's career, he was relegated to performing in vaudeville shows (usually in blackface, and often yelling to the audience "I'm Al's brother"!). Harry claimed that Al prevented him from appearing in movies, using his considerable influence. All of the above information comes directly from Harry Jolson's words, but it is telling that he waited to say any of this until after Al died, so it needs to be taken with a grain of salt! Harry passed away in 1953 at the age of 71. Important Added Info: Note that this still is undated, but is likely from the 1930s. It shows Harry Jolson performing in blackface with the Sunkist Beauties in a Fanchon and Marco show. It is the only item we have ever auctioned that shows Harry Jolson. If anyone knows more about this still, please e-mail us and we will post it here. Also note that this still measures 8" x 10 1/4" [20 x 26 cm]. Condition: good to very good. There is tiny paper loss in the top right blank corner, a few tiny tears in the blank border below that, and faint staining in the left of the top border. Otherwise, the still is in pretty nice condition! Learn More about condition grades
