A 1953 Re-Release Theatrical Linenbacked Insert Movie Poster (measures 14" x 36" [36 x 91 cm]) (Learn More)

Stage Door, the classic 1937 Gregory La Cava (nominated for the Best Director Academy Award for this film) New York City Broadway theater stage struggling actresses romantic acting melodrama ("Now see them together in 'Stage Door'"; "Broadway's sensational stage success becomes the outstanding highlight of all the screen's new big pictures!... Authored by two of the greatest living playwrights, Edna Ferber and George S. Kaufman... Thrillingly directed by the genius behind 'My Man Godfrey', Gregory La Cava... Glamorously produced by Hollywood's ace picturemaker, Pandro S. Berman... Intimately played by the stars daringly cast to sweep you off your feet with curiosity - and satisfaction!... At last the one picture you simply MUST see!"; "A cast like this... A story like this... A director like this... That's what it takes to make the laugh-and-cry hit of the year!"; "From the play by Edna Ferber and George S. Kaufman"; nominated for the Best Picture Academy Award; about a group of young women in New York City wanting desperately to succeed on Broadway, and about the choices they were faced with in trying to get that success) starring Katharine Hepburn, Ginger Rogers, Adolphe Menjou, Gail Patrick, Constance Collier, Andrea Leeds (nominated for the Best Supporting Actress Academy Award for this film), Samuel S. Hinds, Lucille Ball, Eve Arden, Ann Miller, and Ralph Forbes. Note that this is a really excellent movie, and there are many interesting pieces of trivia about it! Margaret Sullavan had played the part on Broadway (it was produced by her husband), but she was not hired to make the movie, because she was pregnant at the time of filming, but Katharine Hepburn had been the first choice for the Broadway show anyway. However, her Hollywood box office appeal was drastically diminished after a series of flops, and originally, she was going to have second billing to Ginger Rogers, but she was able to prevail and retain top billing. This movie gave Lucille Ball a giant break (she was excellent in her role) and it helped her career considerably. Ann Miller was only 14 years old when this movie was made (her mother had lied about her age), but she completely holds her own, including dancing with Ginger Rogers, who was already starring with Fred Astaire in musicals! It is an odd footnote that none of these wonderful actresses (or Eve Arden) were nominated for Oscars, except for Andrea Leeds, who did not go on to a major career! I highly recommend this movie!

Important Added Info: Note that for this 1953 re-release of this 1937 musical, RKO chose to promote it with images of the stars that appear to be taken from 1953 publicity images, rather than those from 1937 (and note that Lucille Ball receives much better billing on the re-release, due to the popularity of her TV show).

What IS linenbacking? Learn More

Overall Condition and Pre-Restoration Defects with Quality of Restoration: good. The poster had some creases along the folds and some creases, smudges, and tears around the edges. Overall, the poster was in good to very good condition prior to linenbacking. The restorer backed the poster "in the European style", meaning that they did not do restoration to the defects described above. The poster was not completely glued correctly, and it is slightly "lifting" from the linen in the lower left.
