Edition Sagot-Estampes and Affiches Illustres (literally translates to "Edition Sagot-Prints and Illustrious Posters"), the 1890s French poster promoting the Edouard Sagot Gallery in Paris, and featuring art by Paul Helleu. In the late 1890s gallery owner Edouard Sagot asked artist Paul Helleu to make a poster to advertise his gallery. Helleu's approach was different in that he didn't do a typical portrait but rather drew an image of a fashionable female customer sitting within Sagot's store inspecting prints. We have heard from a collector that "Besides being a compelling image, this is a very desirable piece from a historical perspective. Edouard Sagot holds a prominent place in the history of the French poster, because he recognized the artistic merit of posters and featured them in his gallery in the 19th century."
Artist: Paul Helleu
Important Added Info: Note that we have only previously auctioned one example of this French poster, and that was 13 years ago!

What IS linenbacking? Learn More

Overall Condition and Pre-Restoration Defects with Quality of Restoration: very good. The poster was never folded. It had some creases and scuffs around the edges, with one in the lower left entering the background of the image. Overall, the poster was in very good condition prior to linenbacking. The restorer backed the poster "in the European style", meaning that they did not do restoration to the defects described above.
