Date Sold 12/8/2009Sold For: Login or Register to see sold price. An Original Vintage Theatrical Linenbacked French "Affiche" Movie Poster (23x32; measures 16" x 31 3/4") (Learn More) The Misfits, the 1961 John Huston modern-day romantic cowboy western ("It shouts and sings with life... explodes with love!"; "Never again will the screen hold such excitement!"; "The world's greatest photographers shoot 'the Misfits'!"; with a screenplay by Arthur Miller) starring Clark Gable (in his last film), Marilyn Monroe (in her last completed film), Montgomery Clift, Thelma Ritter, Eli Wallach, and James Barton (in his last film). Note that Arthur Miller was at the time married to Monroe, but the marriage fell apart during filming. He began to see Inge Morath, a photographer documenting production of this film, and she later became his third and final wife. Also note that Clark Gable went on a crash diet before production started, losing 35 pounds. His health was already precarious, and he hated working with Marilyn Monroe, who could not remember her lines and did not show up on time, which aggravated his condition, and he suffered from a coronary thrombosis the day after shooting finished, dying ten days later. He was 59. NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. Artist: Boris Grinsson Important Added Info: What IS linenbacking? "Linenbacking" is a process that is used to preserve movie posters (the best restorers de-acidify the poster during the restoration process), and to make them far easier to display (it is much easier and less expensive to frame a linenbacked poster). When linenbacking is done correctly, it adds to the value of the poster, and is NOT a defect! Note that the specific poster in this auction was well linenbacked, but the restorer did not attempt to make the poster look "perfect". You may still see some slight evidence of the restoration and/or the defects when you look at the poster from inches away, and you may be able to see slight signs of restoration even from a distance. But the poster now looks quite nice, and I think most collectors would be quite happy to display this poster on their wall. In general, know that we received many of the linenbacked posters we are currently selling already linenbacked, but we have examined every poster EXTREMELY carefully, and we did our best to describe what condition the poster was in PRIOR to restoration, the defects the poster had PRIOR to restoration (in the "Pre-Restoration Defects & Quality of Restoration" section), any unrestored defects, and, when it seemed worth noting, something about the quality of the restoration itself. Many other auction houses claim to match what we do in this area, but EVERY person who regularly buys movie posters from major auctions can tell you this is just not the case! We never intentionally overgrade a single item, we never "accidentally" miss defects, and we never enhance a single image! Condition: very good. The poster had a 1" vertical tear in the right of the top foldline (in Clift's cheek), and a matching tear in the right of the bottom foldline. It had pinholes in the corners and minor fold and border wear. Overall, the poster was in very good condition prior to linenbacking. The poster was nicely backed, and displays well!
