An Original 1940 (from the first release of this movie in the U.K.) Vintage Theatrical English Front of House Movie Lobby Card (FOH LC; 8x10; measures 8" x 10" [20 x 25 cm]) (Learn More) Amok, the 1934 (released in England in 1940 and in the U.S. in 1946) Fyodor Otsep French romantic medical doctor melodrama ("Banned by the Censor"; about a doctor living in a Dutch colony in the tropics; there the natives are dying from a mysterious disease that causes them to go mad, and it is called "Amok", but the doctor has added problems with a woman who wants him to give her an abortion, and he refuses, so she gets one from a Chinese woman, with disastrous consequences) starring Marcelle Chantal, Jean Yonnel, Valery Inkjinoff, Jean Servais, and Hubert Daix. Note that the subject matter of this movie caused it to be banned in both the U.S. and England. The ban was removed in England in 1940 and in the U.S. in 1946. Movie paper of any type from this movie is extremely rare! Finally, note that the phrase "running amok" is commonly used today, to refer to someone "snapping under pressure" and acting violently in an irrational way. But you probably never wondered where the word "amok" came from! It is from the disease described in this movie, which was first seen by Captain Cook in the South Seas in the 1770s, and was observed in topical countries by western doctors for many years after, and it was the subject matter of this movie! Important Added Info: Note that any movie paper from this movie is incredibly rare. We had only previously auctioned a Danish program from this movie until we received this English front of house lobby card! Also note that there were paper shortages in England during and after World War II, and paper was strictly rationed. This front of house lobby card has "PRINTED BEFORE 20TH JAN 1942" embossed in the lower left corner, which the distributors did when this card was reused at a later date, so that people would know that they hadn't broken the law by printing this after that date.
