An Original Vintage Linenbacked World War I Home Front Poster (measures 21" x 28" [53 x 71 cm]) (Learn More)

The Girl Reserves of the Y.W.C.A., the 1918 U.S. World War I (WWI) Home Front poster ("Help us put the Blue Triangle over the top!"; "United War Work Campaign") encouraging women to join the World Young Women's Christian Association, and featuring Poucher art of a woman making a basket with a "Girl Reserves" basketball. The YWCA can trace its history back to 1855 when the philanthropist Lady Mary Jane Kinnaird founded the North London Home for nurses traveling to or from the Crimean War. The Girl Reserves began in 1918 and sought to help girls to develop a well-balanced personality and take on social responsibility. Their logo is a blue GR in an upside-down triangle. Note that this is the earliest poster we have ever auctioned that shows someone playing basketball! While there were lots of baseball and football movies in the 1910s, the earliest movies we have seen that have basketball images are from the mid 1920s, with the earliest being from 1924. Yet this wonderful poster is from six years earlier, and it has great art of a 1918 basketball, a 1918 hoop, and a 1918 girl's basketball uniform!
Artist: Poucher
Important Added Info: Note that we have never before auctioned this poster, and as noted above, it is the earliest basketball poster we have auctioned!

What IS linenbacking? Learn More

Overall Condition and Pre-Restoration Defects with Quality of Restoration: very good. The poster was never folded. It had small tears and tiny paper loss around the edges, but only blank white paper was affected. Overall, the poster was in very good condition prior to linenbacking. The poster was nicely backed, and displays well!
