Date Sold 12/26/2021Sold For: Login or Register to see sold price. An Original Vintage Theatrical Linenbacked Style B One-Sheet Movie Poster (1sh; measures 27" x 41" [69 x 104 cm]) (Learn More) Charlie Chan's Courage, the 1934 Eugene Forde & George Hadden detective mystery crime thriller ("Words of wisdom his only weapons!"; "Based on novel 'The Chinese Parrot,' by Earl Derr Biggers", which had been the source novel of the 1927 Paul Leni silent Chan movie of that name, and this was a sound remake with a different actor in the lead role) starring Warner Oland (in the title role as Charlie Chan), Drue Leyton, Donald Woods, Murray Kinnell, and Paul Harvey. Note that the very first Charlie Chan movie was "House Without a Key" in 1925, with George Kuwa as Chan. In 1927, "The Chinese Parrot" (directed by Paul Leni) starred Sojin Kamiyama as Chan. In 1929 came the third movie, "Behind That Curtain", starring E.L. Park as Charlie Chan. 1931 brought "Charlie Chan Carries On", starring Warner Oland in the first of many movies with him as the Asian detective, and he was later replaced by Sidney Toler and then Roland Winters (there would ultimately be 47 Charlie Chan movies!). Of course, Charlie Chan is one of the most memorable literary creations ever, from author Earl Derr Biggers, but because politically correct-minded people have viewed the character as outdated, the movies are rarely shown, which is a shame! Note that this is a "lost" film which means that no surviving copies are thought to exist. NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. If you know who did the art (if any), please let us know. Important Added Info: Note that we have only previously auctioned a Leader Press one-sheet from this movie (18 years ago!), and no other one-sheets until we were consigned this style B one-sheet! What IS linenbacking? Learn More Overall Condition and Pre-Restoration Defects with Quality of Restoration: good. The poster had tiny paper loss at the crossfolds and a few tiny bits of paper loss on parts of some folds, with a slightly diagonal crease running from the top border down to the middle of the "N" of "CHAN'S", which had some tiny tears on that crease. It had pinholes and tears around the edges, with a stain in the upper left border, extending into the edge of the "C" of "CHAN'S", and a similar stain in the top left corner. Overall, the poster was in good condition prior to linenbacking. Someone backed it onto a very thin linen, with no excess, and with very amateur restoration. If I owned this rare poster, I would surely immediately have it removed from the old thin linen and properly re-backed. Since a high percentage of the defects are in the borders, it will display really well and not require much paint within the image, but bear all of the above in mind before bidding.
