eMoviePoster.comAuction History Result 3h0304 LOT OF 9 HOLLYWOOD 1938 MOVIE MAGAZINES 1938 filled with great images & articles! Date Sold 11/27/2022Sold For: Login or Register to see sold price. a lot of 9 1938 issues of Hollywood ("The Screen's Only Pictorial Magazine"; "The Smartly Different Screen Magazine"; "The Motion Picture Magazine from Hollywood"; "The Talking Picture Magazine from Hollywood"; "The Semi-Monthly Motion Picture Magazine"), one of the many movie magazines sold to the public. Originally, the publishers of this magazine tried to set it apart from the other movie magazines by making it a larger size, and having all the pages printed on a higher quality paper stock. But this cost more, and the trade off was that it sold for 15 cents instead of 10 cents, and even still, they had single color covers, and far less pages than other movie magazines. Apparently, this experiment proved to not be successful and in August of 1930, the magazine was sold to Fawcett Publications (publishers of Screen Play and many other magazines), and Fawcett immediately made it a standard size and went to pulp paper, and slowly converted the magazine to looking just like all the others (they lowered the price back to 10 cents with the April 1932 issue), with each issue featuring a great full color cover of a leading star of the day, plus lots of interior publicity stories about current stars and movies with many black and white images throughout. Also, in every issue are many wonderful vintage ads in black and white, and sometimes the ads can be just as much fun as the original stories and pictures. Of course, some of the ads are from movies that were about to open, and in the early days of eBay, people would remove those full-page ads and auction them by themselves, and they would often sell for $10, $20, or more, just for a single movie ad removed from a magazine just like this! Note that in an odd irony, this magazine which started out selling for 15 cents per copy, compared to 10 cents for most of its competitors, hit on hard times in the late 1930s, when it lowered its price to 5 cents, and promoted itself with the tagline "Only 5 cent movie magazine in the world"! Measurements: 9" x 11"Note that we have provided a picture of the front cover of each magazine, but no other images. Please know that these magazines are sealed in bags and are ready for shipping, and we cannot answer any questions about them or look through them for you, so please bid (or do not bid) based on the images we have provided. Note that this lot of Hollywood magazines (and three others that we are auctioning in three separate auctions) was consigned to us from a former theater owner who discovered them in a box that had been untouched since the magazines were first printed. They are in really exceptional condition, as good as one could hope to find a magazine from this era. All the issues that were found were from between 1938 and 1941. We auctioned a few of these as individual auctions in our last set of auctions, and now we are auctioning the remaining ones in these four bulk lots, and then there are no more magazines from this amazing find. Condition: very good to fine. Please note that we briefly attempted to check to see if the magazines are complete and uncut, and we believe that they are. However, there is a slight possibility that we might have missed a small cut or a page that was neatly removed, and if that happens, you can return the magazines. We have solely provided an overall description of the condition of the magazine, but you can also refer to our super-sized images of the covers. Please bid (or not bid) based on that overall grade and by viewing the super-sized images. Learn More about condition grades Titles included:
