Date Sold 8/3/2021Sold For: Login or Register to see sold price. An Original 1940 (from the first release of this movie in Italy) Vintage Theatrical Folded Italian Two-Panel (known in Italy as a "4 Fogli") Movie Poster (2p; measures 55" x 78" [140 x 198 cm]) (Learn More) The Broken Melody, the 1934 Bernard Vorhaus English musical romantic love triangle composer murder melodrama (about a young composer who wants to write serious music, but he gets a girlfriend who urges him to write popular music instead, but then that backfires when he becomes successful and meets a beautiful woman who falls for him, and he starts a relationship with her, and that is only the beginning of a complicated story!) starring John Garrick, Margot Grahame, Merle Oberon (in one of her first major roles, when she was still making movies in England before coming to Hollywood after The Scarlet Pimpernel made her a top star two films later), Austin Trevor, and Charles Carson. Note that the IMDb identifies this movie as "The Vagabond Violinist", but we think that is a re-release title, and that they are simply wrong. NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. Artist: Anselmo Ballester Important Added Info: Note that when this movie was released in 1934 in England, Merle Oberon was pretty unknown and was third billed, and likely either did not appear on the first release posters or was not prominently pictured. But when this movie was released in Italy in 1940, she WAS a major star, so she was given top billing, and a beautiful image of her dominates the poster (we don't know how she was pictured on any other posters, because, as noted below, we have never auctioned any other posters)! Also note that this is an extremely rare Italian poster from during World War II (we previously auctioned this exact poster, which has been reconsigned to us; not only that, but we have never before auctioned ANY first release posters from any country)! Virtually no Italian posters survive from before, during, or right after World War II (mostly only some heavy stock lobby cards, and even those are rare). Apparently there were many paper shortages in Italy during World War II, resulting in the destruction of almost all posters from before World War II, and also from during the war, and the first few years afterwards! Also note that this Italian two-panel was printed in 2 sections designed to overlap. Condition: good to very good. There is some darkening and small stains on the back of parts of both sections that were on the outside when the two sections were folded. Some of it shows through to the front in the borders and light colored areas. Learn More about condition grades
