eMoviePoster.comAuction History Result 5m0004 LOT OF 26 WHOOPEE 8X10 STILLS 1930 sexy near-nude close-ups by Kenneth Alexander! Date Sold 8/23/2020Sold For: Login or Register to see sold price. a lot of 26 8x10 stills from Whoopee! All but two of the stills have a photographer stamp on the back for Kenneth Alexander, and the other two have a snipe on the back that identifies the girl on the front as Muriel Finley (one of those photos was taken by Alfred Cheney Johnston!). We divided the Whoopee sets into three groups, because of the different types, and because they are extremely "collectible". Of course, Whoopee is the 1930 Thornton Freeland romantic love triangle musical comedy ("From the musical comedy by William Anthony McGuire"; "Music by Walter Donaldson"; "Lyrics by Gus Kahn"; "All Technicolor"; produced by Florenz Ziegfeld and Samuel Goldwyn; about a girl who is engaged to a cowboy sheriff, but she secretly loves a half-breed Indian; she runs off with a hapless man, who thinks he is just giving her a ride, but she left her fiance a note that she eloped with the hapless man, and a wacky chase ensues!) starring Eddie Cantor, Ethel Shutta (a Broadway stage actress who appeared in this one movie, and then not again for 28 years!), Paul Gregory, Eleanor Hunt, Jack Rutherford, Dorothy Knapp, and Jane Keithley. Note that this lot and 21 others we are currently auctioning, were owned by director H. Bruce Humberstone (nicknamed "Lucky"). He was born in 1901 and he started as a juvenile actor, and in his teens, he became a script clerk, and then worked his way up to being an assistant director to many top directors, including King Vidor. In 1932, he directed his first movie, and he worked steadily through the 1930s, 1940s, and 1950s, directing one last movie in 1961. He directed both "A" and "B" movies, including some Tarzan, Charlie Chan, Cisco Kid, and more, and some of his movies have cult status, including "I Wake Up Screaming"! The 22 lots we are currently auctioning include a large number of stills (many of them key books and some include lots of incredible candids showing Humberstone) from movies that he either directed or was the assistant director on, and there are also some non-still items as well, including his personal phone/address book, which had the phone numbers of all the top stars of that time! This is a rare opportunity to obtain large numbers of guaranteed original stills and other items from Humberstone movies that were the property of the man himself! Condition: fine. The stills were stored in a brown folder since they were created, and as noted above, these were assistant director Humberstone's personal stills, and they are in remarkable condition! We still have the brown folder, but it has no printing connected to the movie on it (but someone hand wrote the name of the movie and the production code), and it has darkened with age. If the high bidder on these photos wants it, they could have it, but we can't see that it has any value other than that it lends even more authenticity to the stills being from when the movie was first made. In addition, the folder measures 9 1/2" x 12", so sending it would make for a larger package. Unless the high bidder tells us that they want the folder sent, we will discard it.
