An Original Vintage Theatrical Linenbacked Insert Movie Poster (measures 14" x 36") (Learn More) On the Waterfront, the classic 1954 Elia Kazan (winner of the Best Director Academy Award for this film) crime union corruption dockworker romantic family relationship melodrama ("The truly great picture of the year!"; "A story as warm and moving as Going My Way... but with brass knuckles!"; "Add to the few... the very few... truly memorable screen performances! Marlon Brando as Terry Malloy in 'On the waterfront'... one of the few... the very few... truly great motion pictures!"; "Screenplay by Budd Schulberg"; winner of the Best Picture Academy Award; since both Schulberg and Kazan "named names" and co-operated with the House Un-American Activities Committee, some consider this movie a defense of informers; I consider it one of the finest movies ever made!) starring Marlon Brando (winner of the Best Actor Academy Award for this film), Karl Malden (nominated for the Best Supporting Actor Academy Award for this film), Lee J. Cobb (nominated for the Best Supporting Actor Academy Award for this film), Rod Steiger (nominated for the Best Supporting Actor Academy Award for this film), Pat Henning, Eva Marie Saint (winner of the Best Supporting Actress Academy Award for this film; billed as "Introducing Eva Marie Saint"), John F. Hamilton (as 'Pop' Doyle), and Thomas Handley (as Tommy Collins, the boy who helps with the pigeons; in the movie, he kills the pigeons after Brando's character testifies, which was especially ironic, because young Handley's father was a longshoreman who was killed for opposing union corruption, and he was hired to feed the pigeons on the set, but then Kazan gave him a screen test and he won the role of Tommy; even more interesting, he never made another movie, but he grew up to be a longshoreman himself, and in 2002 was elected recording secretary of his union after the leadership was ousted for corruption!). Note that this one of only three movies (the other two being The Godfather and The Godfather: Part II!) that have ever had 3 different actors nominated for the Best Supporting Actor Oscar! NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. If you know who did the art (if any), please let us know. Condition: good to very good. The poster was folded once across the center. There were several diagonal light scuff lines just above the center fold, with several extending into Brando's chin and cheek. There were several scuff lines to the right of his face. There were creases and smudges scattered around the rest of the poster and in the yellow background, but fortunately, next-to-no others in his face, other than the ones in his chin and cheek, and none in the inset image. Overall, the poster was in good to very good condition prior to linenbacking. Some not-very-talented restorer backed it on to a very thin linen, pretty much "as is". If I owned this great poster, I would surely immediately have it re-backed (either paperbacked or linenbacked), and after proper restoration, the poster will look fantastic (and depending on whether or not the scuff lines can be removed through chemical means will determine how much paint restoration the poster needs, but even if they need to be painted over, there will not be very much restoration in the image or title and credits areas)!
