Date Sold 12/8/2009Sold For: Login or Register to see sold price. An Original 1972 (from the first release of this movie in Japan) Vintage Theatrical Linenbacked Japanese "B2" Movie Poster (measures 20" x 28 1/2") (Learn More) Popsy Pop (released in the U.S. in 1974 as "The Butterfly Affair" and "Queen of Diamonds"), the 1970 Jean Herman French/Italian/Venezuelan crime action thriller ("Cross and doublecross."; "She'd do anything to help them with the heist... And then everything to keep the haul for her own little beautiful self!"; written by Henri Charriere) starring Claudia Cardinale (in the title role as Popsy Pop), Stanley Baker, Henri Charriere, Georges Aminel, and Joachim Hansen. Note that Henri Charriere is better known as Papillon! He was imprisoned on Devil's Island in 1931, and he managed to escape in 1944, settling in Venezuela, where he was considered a celebrity for being the only person who successfully escape from Devil's Island. In 1969, he wrote the book "Papillon", which received worldwide acclaim, and one year later, he parlayed that fame into a role in this movie, which he also wrote. In 1973, the classic movie was adapted from his book, bringing him more worldwide acclaim, but sadly, he died as the movie was released. NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. If you know who did the art (if any), please let us know. Important Added Info: What IS linenbacking? "Linenbacking" is a process that is used to preserve movie posters (the best restorers de-acidify the poster during the restoration process), and to make them far easier to display (it is much easier and less expensive to frame a linenbacked poster). When linenbacking is done correctly, it adds to the value of the poster, and is NOT a defect! Note that the specific poster in this auction was well linenbacked, but the restorer likely did not attempt to make the poster look "perfect". You may still see some slight evidence of the restoration and/or the defects when you look at the poster from inches away. But the poster now looks quite nice, and I think most collectors would be extremely happy to display this poster on their wall. In general, know that we received many of the linenbacked posters we are currently selling already linenbacked, but we have examined every poster EXTREMELY carefully, and we did our best to describe what condition the poster was in PRIOR to restoration, the defects the poster had PRIOR to restoration (in the "Pre-Restoration Defects & Quality of Restoration" section), any unrestored defects, and, when it seemed worth noting, something about the quality of the restoration itself. Many other auction houses claim to match what we do in this area, but EVERY person who regularly buys movie posters from major auctions can tell you this is just not the case! We never intentionally overgrade a single item, we never "accidentally" miss defects, and we never enhance a single image! Condition: very good to fine. The poster was never folded and it had some tiny tears in the borders. Overall, the poster was in very good to fine condition prior to linenbacking. The poster was nicely backed, and displays well!
