eMoviePoster.comAuction History Result 8r130 BEHIND THE MAKE-UP LC 1930 William Powell shields Fay Wray from clown Hal Skelly, ultra rare! Date Sold 8/16/2018Sold For: Login or Register to see sold price. An Original Vintage Theatrical Movie Lobby Card (LC; measures 11" x 14" [28 x 36 cm]) (Learn More) Behind the Make-Up, the 1930 Robert Milton & Dorothy Arzner vaudeville stage acting romantic melodrama (Powell is a down-and-out vaudeville performer, whose friend is a bicycle riding clown; the friend helps him out, and Powell steals both the clown's act, and his girlfriend!) starring Hal Skelly, Fay Wray, William Powell, Kay Francis, Paul Lukas, E.H. Calvert, and Agostino Borgato. Note that Dorothy Arzner was a director from the 1920s to the 1940s, and she was the only woman director during the "Golden Age" of Hollywood ('20s to '40s) and she was the first woman to join the Directors Guild of America. Arzner was a lesbian at a time when almost no females openly were, and she was surprisingly open about it, often dressing in "men's clothes" and wearing her hair short. She made many "women's movies" and movies with a "feminist" theme. After making "First Comes Courage" in 1943, she made training films for the U.S. Army WACs, and she never returned to making Hollywood movies, becoming a film teacher of directing and screenwriting, teaching at UCLA until her passing in 1979. NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. Important Added Info: Note that first release 1930 movie paper from this movie is incredibly rare. We have only auctioned a window card and a different lobby card from this movie in the last 11 years until we received this lobby card, and it has a wonderful close image of the top three stars! Also note that we have a scan of both the front and the back of this lobby card, which should greatly help you see what defects it has. Condition: very good. There was tape on the back of the bottom center, and it was removed, causing surface paper loss on the back of that area, but fortunately, the card is printed on a heavy enough paper that it does not affect the front at all. There are small faint stains in the top left blank corner and in the top edge of the center of the top blank border, with creases in the top of the top blank border. There is paper tape on the back of the top corners, but it was not put there for a restoration purpose, and the card is otherwise in nice condition! Learn More about condition grades
