Date Sold 4/14/2024Sold For: Login or Register to see sold price. An Original Vintage Theatrical Linenbacked One-Sheet Movie Poster (1sh; measures 27" x 41" [69 x 104 cm]) (Learn More) The Return of Dr. Fu Manchu (also released as "The Return of Fu Manchu"), the 1930 Rowland V. Lee Asian crime mystery romantic melodrama sequel ("The mysterious sign of vengeance wars of the Return of Dr. Fu Manchu"; based on the novel by Sax Rohmer; in the first movie, The Mysterious Dr. Fu Manchu, the movie ended with Fu Manchu apparently dead, and the young lovers planning to marry; this sequel opens with their planning their wedding, when it turns out that Fu Manchu is NOT dead after all, and most reviews say that this sequel is better than the first movie!) starring Warner Oland (in the title role as Dr. Fu Manchu), O.P. Heggie (best remembered as the blind man who befriends the monster in "The Bride of Frankenstein", and also as the next door cellmate to Robert Donat in "The Count of Monte Cristo"), Jean Arthur, Neil Hamilton, Evelyn Hall, and Tetsu Komai. Finally, note that, as noted above, the movie has two similar titles. In the pressbook, the title is given as "The Return of Dr. Fu Manchu", but the posters shown in the pressbook use the other title "The Return of Fu Manchu"! Also, the jumbo lobby cards and still use the "The Return of Dr. Fu Manchu" title. So obviously, they used both versions at the same time, and we don't know why! If anyone knows more about this, please e-mail us and we will post it here. NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. If you know who did the art (if any), please let us know. Important Added Info: Note that we have only previously auctioned one example of this one-sheet, and that example has now been reconsigned to us, so this is still the only example we have ever auctioned (we had also only previously auctioned a pressbook, a set of 4 jumbo lobby cards, and some stills, but NO posters from this movie until we received this one-sheet)! What IS linenbacking? Learn More Overall Condition and Pre-Restoration Defects with Quality of Restoration: fair to good. The poster had 6" missing from the left side. It also had a rectangle of paper loss in the upper middle, in the red background area, and affecting the bottom of the "FU". It had paper loss in the middle of the "M" to the right of that. It also had small paper loss scattered in the top center, starting in the top border and extending down into the top of the first "R" of "RETURN". It had a vertical tear running from the left of Arthur's hair, down the middle of her face, touching the right end of her eye, and extending into the top of the poster. There was paper loss in the middle of her hair and a tear below that, extending through her ear. There was paper loss in her neck, touching the bottom of the hair, with a tear running below that, down to the bottom border. It had a few other less important defects. Overall, the poster was in fair condition prior to linenbacking. A really talented restorer performed magnificent restoration to the poster, and it now displays really well. I feel certain that the vast majority of people viewing it would think that it had had relatively slight restoration, and would never realize the extent of what was done to it. Obviously, one would much prefer an unrestored example of this poster, but it is incredibly rare (we could find no record of it being auctioned or sold), and it will look wonderful on the new owner's wall, but bear all of the above in mind before bidding, and look closely at our super-sized image.
