Date Sold 4/16/2023Sold For: Login or Register to see sold price. An Original Vintage Theatrical Movie Pressbook (pb; measures 12 1/4" x 18 1/2" [31 x 47 cm]; 28 pages) (Learn More) Howard Hawks' His Girl Friday, the classic 1940 Howard Hawks newspaper journalism romantic love triangle comedy ("They're at each other's throats... when they're not in each other's arms!"; "The year's most uproarious romance!"; "I demand my rights... Life... Liberty... and the Pursuit of Rosalind Russell!"; "She learned about men from him!"; "Screen play by Charles Lederer"; "Based on a play by Ben Hecht and Charles MacArthur"; interestingly, this was a re-make of the classic 1931 newspaper movie, "The Front Page", except this movie had the very clever idea of re-casting one of the male leads as a female, and since the character in the original was named "Hildy Johnson", they were even able to keep the same name!) starring Cary Grant, Rosalind Russell, Ralph Bellamy, Gene Lockhart, Porter Hall, Marion Martin, John Qualen, Roscoe Karns, Cliff Edwards, Frank Jenks, Regis Toomey, Helen Mack, and Abner Biberman NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. Artist: Banye Important Added Info: Note that we have only previously auctioned one example of this pressbook, and that example had cuts and was only in "fair" condition (and it still sold for $240), while this example is complete and uncut! Also note that the cover of this pressbook is very frustrating, because the art is clearly signed, but it is difficult to read the artist's signature! It looks like "Banye". We know this same artist did other work for Columbia at this time. If anyone knows the exact spelling of the artist's name or more about him, please e-mail us and we will post it here. Note that we have provided an image of the front and back covers of this pressbook (if the back cover is not the poster page, we photographed the interior poster page), and of course, the winner of this auction will receive the entire single pressbook we are auctioning (plus any supplements or heralds described above)! Also note that this pressbook is complete and uncut! Given that theater owners received pressbooks partly in order to create their newspaper advertising, and quite frequently cut them up for that purpose, it is rare to find a pressbook that IS complete and uncut! Note that for the past 18 months, we have auctioned one of the most extraordinary collections of pressbooks ever assembled! What made it so extraordinary is that it contained lots and lots of extremely rare pressbooks, mostly from the 1930s and 1940s, including many that we had never auctioned before. In our last few regular auctions, we auctioned most of the last of this gigantic collection, and now, in this April Major Auction, we are auctioning the very last of them, and one quick look tells you that "we saved many of the very best for last"! This is your FINAL opportunity to buy from this extraordinary collection! Condition: good to very good, NO CUTS. The pressbook is complete and uncut. The covers are separated at the spine. There is some wear around the edges of the covers. Learn More about condition grades
