An Original Vintage Linenbacked Circus Poster (measures 20 3/4" x 26 3/4" [53 x 68 cm]) (Learn More) Ringling Bros and Barnum and Bailey, the circa 1950s circus poster ("The Greatest Show on Earth") featuring a great Lawson Wood artwork image of a band made of apes. Note that while this poster is clearly vintage, and appears to be from before the 1970s, but we don't know for sure when it is from. The 1950s date we give to it is purely a guess, based on the image and the quality of the printing and the age of the paper. If anyone knows more about this poster, please e-mail us and we will post it here. The modern version of the circus started in 1919 when the Barnum & Bailey's Greatest Show on Earth, a circus created by P. T. Barnum and James Anthony Bailey, was merged with the Ringling Bros. World's Greatest Shows. With weakening attendance and high operating costs, the circus closed on May 21st, 2017 after 146 years. NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. Artist: Lawson Wood Overall Condition and Pre-Restoration Defects with Quality of Restoration: very good. The poster was never folded and had some creases, smudges, and tiny stains in the borders. Overall, the poster was in very good condition prior to linenbacking. The poster was nicely backed, and displays well! Note that the poster has an extra wide excess mat, and it appears that the mat was attached to something with staples, and there are staple holes across the top and bottom edge of the excess mat, and the one in the bottom right corner was roughly removed, causing a tear in the excess mat.
