An Original Vintage Theatrical Linenbacked One-Sheet Movie Poster (1sh; measures 28" x 42" [71 x 107 cm]) (Learn More) Marihuana, the 1935 Dwain Esper marijuana marihuana pot weed drug crime thriller ("Daring Drug Expose!"; "Horror Shame Despair!"; "Today's headlines.... Tomorrow's despair....!"; "What happens at marihuana parties?"; "Lust crime sorrow despair shame hate"; "Not recommended for children"; "Smoke that gets in youth's eyes!"; "Misery"; "Weird orgies, wild parties, unleashed passions!"; "America's Crime Creator!"; "A puff of smoke changed their lives!"; "The weed with roots in Hell!", "The sweet pill...that makes life bitter!"; "The most daring picture ever made!") starring Harley Wood, Gloria Browne, Pat Carlyle, Juanita Crosland, Dorothy Dehn, Paul Ellis, Richard Erskine, Hugh McArthur and Hal Taggart. At the time this movie was meant to be a "daring drug expose", but it is now laughable and a camp classic, and posters from the first release of the movie in 1935 (and the roadshow releases that followed it in the late 1930s and early 1940s) are both rare and extremely desired by collectors. If you know who did the art (if any), please let us know. Important Added Info: Note that it is impossible to date this poster. The movie was first released in 1935, but it was taken around the U.S. and played in individual towns and cities over the next 20 years. Looking at the poster and the quality of the printing, I would guess it is possibly from the early 1940s, but there is no way of knowing for sure. No matter when it is from (whether the 1930s or 1940s), it is certainly a wonderful poster! Note that there is at least one other similar version of this poster which appears to date from the same time (it has very similar art, but a slightly different layout and background colors) and there are also similar posters where the girl at top has a different hairstyle! There is a collector who has literally spent years compiling images of EVERY different poster from this movie, and he has done massive research trying to exactly date when each poster is from, but some of his research naturally involves some guessing, so I am reluctant to put an exact date on this poster until the day that it can be precisely dated. We auctioned an example of the different similar style four years ago (and it sold for $1,700 in "good to very good" condition), and we had not auctioned an example of this style one-sheet for 12 years until 2020, when we auctioned an example for $4,600! That poster which we auctioned in 2020 was consigned to us by a man who acquired it around 30 years ago. After the auction ended, we were contacted by a close relative of that consignor who told us that his relative had originally had two examples of the poster, and that decades ago, he gave the other example to his relative as a gift! When the relative saw that the other example auctioned for $4,600, he decided to consign his example (which is in similar condition to the other example, and was likely backed at the same time). This is NOT the same example as the one we auctioned in 2020 (and it certainly is still a very rare and desirable poster). Also note that this one-sheet measures 28 1/2" x 42" [72 x 107 cm]. What IS linenbacking? Learn More Overall Condition and Pre-Restoration Defects with Quality of Restoration: good to very good. The poster was never machine folded, but it has seven horizontal folds, with some creases, small tears, and small paper loss along parts of the folds. It had paper loss in the black background between the man and woman's faces, and between the man's hair and the top left tagline box, but fortunately, the paper loss is not in either of the faces. There are some pinholes and tears around the edges, and water staining in the left half of the bottom blank border. Overall, the poster was in good condition prior to linenbacking. The poster linenbacked many years ago, and the restorer did restoration to the folds, but left alone the water staining in the bottom blank border. The poster was roughly handled after it was backed, and there are now creases in the bottom 5" of the poster and the linen backing, but it is not very noticeable from the front. While the poster can be displayed and enjoyed as it is, personally, I would have it removed from the old backing and properly re-backed, and afterwards, this classic poster will display wonderfully on the new owner's wall!
