eMoviePoster.comAuction History Result C017 BLACK CAT lobby card '34 Boris Karloff Date Sold 3/23/2004Sold For: Login or Register to see sold price. An Original Vintage Theatrical Movie Lobby Card (measures 11" x 14") (Learn More) The Black Cat, the classic 1934 Edgar Ulmer Universal horror thriller ("Based on a story by Edgar Allan Poe"; "Things you never saw before or ever dreamed of!"; the ads said "based on the Edgar Allan Poe story", but it is very loosely based on it!; Karloff and Lugosi are arch enemies who meet again after many years, and there is a honeymooning couple who is marooned at Karloff's creepy castle, and Lugosi tries to rescue them and get revenge on his old enemy, and meanwhile, there is Satanic worship and black cats roaming the place, and all kinds of weird stuff that you need to see for yourself!) starring Boris Karloff, Bela Lugosi, David Manners, Julie Bishop (billed as "Jacqueline Wells"), Lucille Lund, Luis Alberni, and Henry Armetta NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. Condition: good. There is surface scuffing over the entire card. The image at the right is that of Karloff and the girl being seen through a curtain, and that curtain makes it difficult to know exactly where the curtain ends and where the surface scuffing begins. Looking at the title area below the image, you get a sense of the amount of surface scuffing. There is a much lesser amount of surface scuffing in the left 2" of the card. There are some sort of dirt stains within the image area as well (the largest is in the background to the left of Karloff). There are tiny pinholes in the corners. I have no idea how difficult it would be for a professional restorer to make this card look better. I imagine the stains could be removed by chemical means, but I am unclear as to what techniques would be used to improve on the surface scuffing. If it were paint restoration, then the card would likely have a "restored" look to it after restoration. On the other hand, original lobby cards from "The Black Cat" are virtually never offered for sale, and when they are, they sell for many thousands, so this may be one of the only chances bidders have to get an original card from this Universal horror classic. But please do not bid on it unless you can accept its defects or are willing to pay to have the card restored. Learn More about condition grades
