An Original Vintage Theatrical Linenbacked German "A1" Movie Poster (measures 23" x 33" [58 x 84 cm]) (Learn More) Tiefland (released in the U.S. as "Lowlands"), the 1954 Leni Riefenstahl Austrian/German gypsy romantic love triangle melodrama (based on the work by Eugen d'Albert) starring Leni Riefenstahl, Maria Koppenhofer, Franz Eichberger, Luis Rainer, and Bernhard Minetti. Note that this is a VERY unusual movie! It was Riefenstahl's first movie after Olympiad (both parts), and she began filming in 1940. It concerned gypsies in a mythical gypsy province of Spain with a power crazed leader who abuses his power (and the comparisons to Hitler are obvious). Riefenstahl used real gypsies in the movie, and she rescued most of her cast from concentration camps. The movie was not finished, and the film was seized by the Allies. After World War II, Riefenstahl spent years trying to prove she was not a Nazi sympathizer (difficult to do, to say the least!), but she managed to do so, and in 1953, she was able to locate the footage of this movie that had been shot. She could not use her original cast, since most of them had died in concentration camps, but she managed to finish the film and it was given its first release in 1954, and she never made another movie until 2003, when she made a single documentary! We have only previously auctioned three German programs from this movie until we received this poster, which is a "country of origin" poster for this partially German movie! What IS linenbacking? Learn More Overall Condition and Pre-Restoration Defects with Quality of Restoration: good. The poster was never folded. It had some tears and paper loss in the upper right, extending to just above the man's head. It had smaller tears and paper loss in the rest of the borders and some creases and scuffs scattered in the image. Overall, the poster was in good condition prior to linenbacking. At some point after the poster was backed, it acquired rippling down the right 5", both in the poster and in the linen. It is somewhat noticeable from the front and needs to be considered before bidding on this poster. Learn More about condition grades
