Date Sold 11/29/2020Sold For: Login or Register to see sold price. A Folded French Advertising Poster (measures 31 1/4" x 47" [79 x 119 cm]) (Learn More) Le Thermogene, the French poster (with a tagline that translates to "Generates heat and fights coughing, rheumatism, side stitches") promoting the purchase of Le Thermogene (which was 40% capsicum from cayenne peppers), and featuring art of a green devil dancing and breathing fire while clutching a wad of medicine soaked cotton to his chest. Note that a slightly different version of this poster was originally printed in 1907 with the same Leonetto Cappiello art, but with slightly different coloring and slightly different words. It proved to be unbelievably popular, because of the wonderful art, and they made new versions of it regularly. If you know who did the art (if any), please let us know. Important Added Info: Note that we are unsure of the date of this poster. It is clearly vintage, almost certainly from the 1930s or earlier, but that is all we know. It has a printer name and address at lower left and numbers and letters in the lower right and certainly those might guarantee what year it is from, but only an expert would know. If anyone knows more about this, please e-mail us and we will post it here. Note also that this poster was folded at one time but has been laying flat for a long time and will be sent rolled in a tube. Condition: fair. The poster has two significant defects. It was originally tri-folded and the back of the entire center of the poster (going slightly above and below the folds) has much water staining on the back of it and some of it affects the front quite a bit, especially at and above the top fold and at and below the bottom fold. The other significant defect is a thin strip of paper loss in the devil's face, as seen in our image and several smaller areas of paper loss in the right of his head and in the background to the right of that. The poster also has tears and tiny paper loss around the edges. Obviously a talented restorer could rescue this wonderful poster, but bear in mind its many defects and read the above carefully before bidding on it and only bid if you are willing to pay to have it properly restored.
