An Original Vintage Theatrical Unfolded Insert Movie Poster (measures 14" x 36" [36 x 91 cm]) (Learn More)

A Day at the Races, the classic 1937 Sam Wood horse racing sports gambling screwball comedy ("The year's big laugh, music and girl show!") starring the Marx Brothers (Groucho Marx, Chico Marx, and Harpo Marx), Allan Jones, Maureen O'Sullivan, Margaret Dumont, Esther Muir, Douglass Dumbrille, Sig Ruman, Leonard Ceeley, and Dorothy Dandridge (in an uncredited early role, in a sequence where a large number of young black African American men and women sing with Harpo). Note that this movie includes the classic comedy sequence where Groucho tries to buy a horse racing tip from Chico's Tootsie-Frootsie ice cream cart!

Artist: Al Hirschfeld
Important Added Info: Note that we have only previously auctioned one example of this first release insert, and that was 16 years ago, when it sold for $4,508! Also note that this poster has never been machine folded! Some pre-1970 insert posters were machine folded twice horizontally at the poster exchange, while some were not. It can be difficult to find an unfolded example of many pre-1970 insert posters (note that most post-1970 inserts were NOT machine folded, so they are pretty much only found unfolded, and therefore this does not apply to those inserts).

Condition: good. The poster has paper loss in the upper right border, but it is incredibly fortunate that it s 100% within the blue background and the blank white border! The poster was never machine folded, but it has a slightly diagonal fold near the center, with some creases and scuffs along that fold. There is a much more diagonal fold running from above Groucho's head, through Harpo's credit, to the right border. There is a slightly diagonal fold in the lower part of the poster running through Jones' head and the middle of the word "RACES". There is a diagonal crease in the bottom right corner and a small one in the top left corner that only affects the border and background. There is a 1 1/2" jagged tear in the top of the horse's head that has tiny surface paper loss. Someone put tape on the back of the above tears and parts of the creases, but otherwise, no restoration was performed. We did not have this poster restored prior to auctioning for two reasons. One is that this way you can see exactly what defects the poster has, and just as important, you can see that the unaffected portions of the poster are in really nice condition. The other is that the winning bidder will be able to choose not only exactly WHO restores the poster, but also how much restoration they perform. I would hope that it is restored in a minimalist fashion, because the defects are really not substantial (due to their locations), but it will be the choice of the new owner of the poster as to how much restoration is performed. Either way, the new owner of this poster will have a wonderful and rare poster to display on their wall!
