Date Sold 12/5/2010Sold For: Login or Register to see sold price. An Original Vintage Special Movie Poster (measures 30" x 40" [76 x 102 cm]) (Learn More) Forbidden Planet, the classic 1956 Fred McLeod Wilcox science fiction (sci-fi) outer space robot monster thriller ("Amazing!"; "In Cinemascope and Color"; "Based on the story by Irving Block & Allen Adler"; very loosely adapted from William Shakespeare's "The Tempest"; about space men who journey to a distant planet, and they find that all the members of the original expedition have died, except for one man and his daughter, and they have discovered the secrets of a long lost civilization called "The Krell", which dwarfs anything humans have ever discovered, but there is a very dark side to those secrets that is soon revealed) starring Walter Pidgeon, Anne Francis, Leslie Nielsen, Warren Stevens, Jack Kelly, Richard Anderson, Earl Holliman (as the cook, who was put in the movie for comic relief), Robby the Robot (billed as "Introducing Robby the Robot"), James Drury, and Frankie Darro (who was inside the robot suit until he was fired early in the production for showing up inebriated and almost damaging the expensive prop). Note that after Robby the Robot appeared in this movie, he had another movie role in "The Invisible Boy", and then he appeared in a slightly modified version as the robot in TV's "Lost in Space". On November 21, 2017, the original "Robby the Robot" was auctioned, and it sold for $5.375 million! NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. If you know who did the art (if any), please let us know. Important Added Info: Note that poster exchanges in the 1930s to 1950s would often provide large theaters with very large "colorized" photos on a very heavy board (sometimes one-sheet sized, or sometimes 30x40, like this poster, or 40x60) from major releases, which the theaters would display in their lobbies. But because these heavy board posters (similar to the Meloy Bros. 40x60s of the mid-1930s in weight) made perfect wall insulation in those pre-asbestos days, very few of them survive, except when they are found inside walls, and then they are usually in terrible condition. I have never seen or heard of one of these 30x40 sized oversized stills from Forbidden Planet before! Condition: good. The poster was created on a very heavy stiff board backing. There is surface paper loss in each of the four corners (typical of posters like these) and there were some pinholes, tears, and tiny areas of paper loss around the edges of the poster. There were some scuffs, smudges, and stains scattered throughout the poster, including some in the faces and figures of the two stars. Someone performed slight restoration to the image area. Please do not bid on this really cool poster unless you can accept its defects described above (and have studied our super-sized image). Learn More about condition grades
