An Original Vintage Theatrical Paperbacked Jumbo Window Card Movie Poster (WC; measures 22" x 28") (Learn More) The Merry Widow, the 1934 Ernst Lubitsch romantic musical comedy ("The world's greatest spectacle of music, love and laughter!"; written by Samson Raphaelson; based on book and lyrics by Victor Leon & Leo Stein and music by Franz Lehar, from his 1905 operetta; about a mythical tiny country in Europe, and their richest citizen, a widow, goes to Paris, and the king of the country is afraid she will never come back, so he sends the country's greatest lover to try to marry her and keep her in their country!) starring Maurice Chevalier, Jeanette MacDonald, Edward Everett Horton, Sterling Holloway, Una Merkel, George Barbier, and Minna Gombell. Note that there was a 1925 silent version of this musical (a neat trick!) directed by Erich Von Stroheim, and a 1952 version starring Fernando Lamas and a non-singing Lana Turner (whose singing voice was dubbed)! This means the poster was backed onto a paper backing (acid-free), that is similar in feel to that of the original poster (except somewhat heavier). It is a similar process to linenbacking, except that most collectors use linenbacking for one-sheets and paperbacking for half-sheets, inserts, window cards, and lobby cards. Condition: good to very good. Prior to paperbacking, the card had some nail holes, tears, stains, and smudges around the edges, and a much lesser amount scattered in the image, with some scuffing across the top of the title, extending into MacDonald's neck and chin. Some talented restorer paperbacked the card and performed restoration to the above defects and I like how they did the restoration, because, while you can see signs of it from close up, from any reasonable viewing distance, the card looks quite nice, and it does not have a "heavily restored" look at all. Note that at some point after the poster was dry-mounted onto the board, it was creased in the top left blank corner (both in the poster and in the backing board). Learn More about condition grades
