An Original Vintage Unfolded Special Movie Poster (measures 47 1/4" x 68" [120 x 173 cm]) (Learn More)

Gangs of New York, the 2002 Martin Scorsese (nominated for Best Director Academy Award) Italian/U.S. historical New York City crime family relationship romantic epic melodrama (nominated for the Best Picture Academy Award; "America Was Born In The Streets."; loosely based on the 1927 book "The Gangs of New York" by Herbert Asbury; about New York City during the middle 19th century, and about Irish gangs and corrupt politicians) starring Leonardo DiCaprio, Daniel Day-Lewis (nominated for the Best Actor Academy Award for this film; as Bill "The Butcher" Cutting), Cameron Diaz, Jim Broadbent (as "Boss" Tweed), John C. Reilly, Henry Thomas, Brendan Gleeson, and Liam Neeson. Note that this was a dream project for Martin Scorsese. He wanted to film it in the late 1970s, but the epic failure of "Heaven's Gate" meant that no studio would consider it. He finally got the financing for it in 2001, and the movie was scheduled to be opened on Christmas Day 2001, but Scorsese was not done filming in time. That created a giant problem, because he wanted to move it back to Christmas Day 2002, but DiCaprio had another movie, "Catch Me If You Can", opening then, and the studios were afraid to open both movies on the same day. Ultimately, it opened on December 20, 2002, almost a full year after it had been scheduled to first open.

Important Added Info: Note that this is a very special and very unusual poster. As noted above, this movie was originally scheduled to open on Christmas Day 2001. There was a party for distributors in the fall of 2001, and our consignor tells us that for that party, they made a special set of three "character" one-sheets (with DiCaprio, Diaz, and Lewis), and printed 20 of each, and those were given out at the party. In addition, they made just one each of these three special posters with the same images as the one-sheets, measuring 47 1/4" x 68", similar to that of bus stops, and those were displayed at that party. Not only do the posters have completely different images from what was eventually used a year later in 2002, when the movie was finally released, but they are also printed on a very high gloss UV coated paper that is unlike what one-sheets or bus stops were printed on at that time! We have no documentation to verify what we say is true, but our consignor purchased the three 47 1/4" x 68" character posters from someone at the studio, and that person told him the above story. He sold the Daniel Day-Lewis poster privately to a collector, and now we are auctioning the other two. We have never auctioned these posters before, and based on the above story, we will almost certainly never see them again! We also have never seen the special one-sheets he describes above, and we certainly wish we eventually are consigned at least one of those, but to the best of our knowledge, they have never surfaced.

Condition: very good to fine. As noted above, this poster was printed on a special very high gloss UV coated paper that is unlike what one-sheets or bus stops were printed on at that time! It is in nice condition and looks even better than our digital image!
