A Matted Autographed Photo (measures 6" x 8" [15 x 20 cm]; entire display measures 11" x 14") (Learn More) Lew Ayres was born in Minnesota in 1908, but he was raised in San Diego, California. After two minor roles in 1929 he landed the plum role of the young man who gives Greta Garbo the "kiss" in her movie "The Kiss", and that got him noticed, and his very next picture was the starring role in Lewis Milestone's anti-war classic, All Quiet on the Western Front, which made him a major star. He starred in over 20 movies through the early and mid 1930s. In 1937 Paramount had made Internes Can't Take Money, a "young doctor" picture starring Joel McCrea as Dr. Kildare, and MGM decided to make a series about that character the following year, but McCrea was a Paramount star, so they cast Ayres, who was under contract to MGM, in the lead in the first of these, Young Dr. Kildare, and he was very popular, and EIGHT sequels were cranked out in just four years! But then Ayres was drafted in WWII, and he declared himself a conscientious objector, which was a wildly unpopular thing to do at that time, and the public and MGM said they would never view another Lew Ayres movie. But he joined the Medical Corps and served as both a medic and a chaplain's aid, and slowly he was rehabilitated with the public, as news of his service was reported. After the war he starred in a few movies, including a notable role in Johnny Belinda, where he was nominated for Best Actor. But like so many other aging leading men, starring roles grew scarce for Ayres, and after taking the lead in the low budget Donovan's Brain, Ayres turned to TV, where he made scores of appearances. He completely turned his back on making movies, but he did have one notable appearance, looking as handsome as ever, in the small but important role as Vice President Harley Hudson in Advise and Consent in 1962. He made a few TV appearances all the way up to 1994, and he passed away in 1996 AND Jane Wyman was an actress from the 1930s to the 1980s. Some of her movies include: The Lost Weekend, My Man Godfrey, Blue Veil (in her nominated for Best Actress Academy Award role), Magnificent Obsession (in her nominated for Best Actress Academy Award role), Yearling (in her nominated for Best Actress Academy Award role), and Johnny Belinda. In the late 1930s, she appeared with Ronald Reagan in a movie, and married him in 1940, and they were divorced in 1948, having had two children. She played Angela Channing on TV's "Falcon Crest" throughout the 1980s. Important Added Info: Note that this photo (which may measure larger than 6" x 8", and may be an original photo rather than a repro, but we don't want to disassemble the matted display to determine that) has been personally autographed (signed) by BOTH Lew Ayres AND Jane Wyman! It was nicely matted and is ready to frame and hang on your wall! Note that this item was consigned to us by an individual who owned a company that made movies and videos with famous celebrities in the 1980s and 1990s. The owner of the company would have the celebrities sign items from their famous films, and sometimes he would find second or third celebrities to autograph an item he already had gotten signed! In addition, he would ask celebrities he came in contact with if they had signed items from other stars that they would sell to him, and he purchased a number of items that way. He also would purchase unsigned items from the famed Larry Edmunds Bookshop in Los Angeles (to have the celebrities sign), and while he was doing that he would also purchase some of their signed items. So all of these autographed items we are auctioning were either obtained in person, obtained from celebrities who obtained them in person, or obtained from the Larry Edmunds Bookshop, and we feel certain that the autograph(s) on this item is authentic! As is true of all the signed items we are currently auctioning, we give every buyer 30 days in which to review what they purchased and they can return any item as long as it is within 30 days of the end of the auction.
