Date Sold 6/25/2020Sold For: Login or Register to see sold price. An Original Vintage Theatrical Movie Title Lobby Card (LC TC; measures 11" x 14" [28 x 36 cm]) (Learn More) All Quiet on the Western Front, the classic 1930 Lewis Milestone (winner of the Best Director Academy Award for this movie) World War I (WWI) anti-war military melodrama ("At last... The motion picture!"; "Universal all talking picture"; from the equally classic novel by Erich Maria Remarque; the movie is from the point of view of German soldiers, and is rabidly anti-war, both of which made the movie very controversial!; winner of the Best Picture Academy Award) starring Lew Ayres (billed as "Lewis Ayres"), Louis Wolheim (who would have won the Best Supporting Actor Academy Award had there been one in 1930!), John Wray, Arnold Lucy, Ben Alexander, Scott Kolk, Owen Davis Jr., Walter Rogers (billed as "Walter Brown Rogers"), William Bakewell, Russell Gleason, Richard Alexander, Harold Goodwin, Slim Summerville, G. Pat Collins, Beryl Mercer, Yola d'Avril (as the French girl Ayres romances by giving her food), and Raymond Griffith. Note that Zasu Pitts was set to appear in the film, but in early screenings, audience members laughed due to her comedienne status, so she was replaced with Beryl Mercer who later appeared in The Public Enemy! Also note that the one-sheet for this classic movie showed a battle-scarred soldier close up. Many people incorrectly assumed that it is Lew Ayres, the star of the movie. It was actually Walter Browne Rogers, and he was chosen as a "haunted unknown soldier", and in the movie his character is killed early on (and we have seen an article that quotes Lew Ayres as saying that he hoped Rogers would get a break out of this, but Rogers made no more movies after this!). NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. Important Added Info: Note that we have only previously auctioned one example of this title card, and that was in a complete set 30 years ago! Perhaps part of the reason this title card is so incredibly rare is that the movie was re-released in 1934, and the cards look like the first release ones, but they have a 1934 copyright at the bottom left, while this card has "COUNTRY OF ORIGIN AND PRODUCTION U.S.A.". It may be 30 more years before we auction another example of this card! Also note that we have a scan of both the front and the back of this lobby card, which should greatly help you see what defects it has. Condition: good. The card has pinholes and stains around the edges, with tiny paper loss in three places in the blank borders. It has diagonal creases in the top corners. It has some creases and scuffs scattered throughout the image. It has two very old tape repairs on the back and two small pieces of conservation tape on the back of the top border, where it was once attached to a mat. See our super-sized images to get a good sense of the condition of this card. Learn More about condition grades
