An Undated (probably 1940s) Re-Release Theatrical Movie Title Lobby Card (LC TC; measures 11" x 14" [28 x 36 cm]) (Learn More)

Angels with Dirty Faces, the classic 1938 Michael Curtiz (nominated for the Best Director Academy Award for this film) romantic crime murder thriller melodrama (in this movie, quintessential tough guy Cagney is a hero to the Dead End Kids, and at the end his childhood pal, now a priest, asks him to be a coward as he is led to the electric chair to help keep those kids from following in his footsteps; "A story... mighty with the clash of men! A picture... unforgettable in its greatness!"; "Sensational in it's dramatic impact!"; "From a Story by Rowland Brown") starring James Cagney (nominated for the Best Actor Academy Award for this film; as Rocky Sullivan), Pat O'Brien (as Father Jerry Connolly), The Dead End Kids (Leo Gorcey [as Bim], Billy Halop [as Soapy], Huntz Hall [as Crab], Bobby Jordan, Gabriel Dell, Bernard Punsly), Humphrey Bogart (as James Frazier), Ann Sheridan (as Laury Ferguson), George Bancroft, and Frankie Burke (as the young Rocky; he was an unknown 17 year-old newsboy when he was discovered to play the young James Cagney, because he had an uncanny resemblance to young James Cagney!)

Important Added Info: Note that this is a Warner Bros. title where there are both "linen" and "flat" finish lobby cards, and in this case of this movie and a few other Warner Bros. titles of the very early 1940s, also inserts. Some people have suggested that both versions are from the very first release of the movie. One leading expert we know says that he believes that the "flat" finish lobby cards and inserts are probably from an early 1940s re-release of this movie (because Warner Bros. was short on new movies since so many of their stars had enlisted!). It is also possible that the flat finish items are from the "general" release that occurred after the movie played in major first run theaters. Our personal view is that this release occurred in the 1942 to 1944 time frame, when Warner Bros. was losing money (due to a combination of many of their stars having enlisted, and having lost their European distribution). However, no one knows for certain which of the above is correct, so please do not bid on this lobby card, unless you can accept the uncertainty about exactly when it was first printed! Also note that we have a scan of both the front and the back of this lobby card, which should greatly help you see what defects it has.

Condition: good to very good. The card had many smudges, stains, and a few tears and pinholes around the edges. It had a pinhole in O'Brien's cheek and one in the "W" of "WITH". It had some stains in the "BR" of "O'BRIEN" and a crease above Cagney's eye. A talented restorer performed restoration to the card without backing it (perhaps through gel-backing), and from any reasonable viewing distance, the card displays well, but you can still see slight signs of the above defects and their restoration (see our image).
