(Learn More) The King Steps Out, the 1936 Josef von Sternberg romantic musical ("Grandest of all musical love dramas!"; "Again... That golden voice rings out!..."; "She stole a king on his wedding day!"; "Again her golden voice holds the world breathless in its spell!") starring Grace Moore, Franchot Tone, Walter Connolly, Raymond Walburn, and Elisabeth Risdon. Note that Grace Moore was a major New York opera star starting in 1928 (she was called "The Tennessee Nightingale") who was hired by MGM in 1930 to star in a biography of Jenny Lind called "A Lady's Morals", and there was a French language version as well, where she played the lead, but all the other cast were French people. But neither version was a big hit, and she made one other movie for MGM, and then she returned to the opera. But in 1934, Columbia hired her to make another movie, "One Night of Love", and this was much better received, and she appeared in five more Columbia movies, including this one, directed by Josef von Sternberg, who had moved to Columbia after making his very successful Marlene Dietrich movies for Paramount. Grace Moore was killed in a plane crash in 1947, and a biography of her life was made in 1953, "So This is Love", with Kathryn Grayson playing Grace Moore! NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. Important Added Info: Note that when studios would prepare pressbooks they would often include a sample of the herald. Most often, the herald is no longer still with the pressbook. Sometimes, the herald by itself will sell for almost as much as the rest of the entire pressbook! This English pressbook contains the original herald which is pictured next to the pressbook below. Also note that pressbooks were prepared prior to a movie being released. Often, changes would be made in a movie advertising campaign (billing of actors, different images, etc.), and the theaters would print up special supplements that they would send out with the pressbooks that had already been printed. These supplements are very rare, far more rare than the pressbooks themselves! Some pressbooks would have no supplements, some would have one, and some would have several. Almost every Academy Award winning movie would have a special "Academy Award winner" supplement. Also note that we have provided an image of the front and back covers of this pressbook, and of course, the winner of this auction will receive the entire single pressbook we are auctioning (plus any supplements or heralds described above)! Also note that this English pressbook is complete and uncut! Given that theater owners purchased pressbooks partly in order to create their newspaper advertising, and quite frequently cut them up for that purpose, it is rare to find a pressbook that IS complete and uncut! Condition: good to very good, NO CUTS. The pressbook is complete and uncut. It was folded across the middle at one time. There are some faint stains scattered throughout on the covers, with surface paper loss in the top right of the front cover. Learn More about condition grades
