An Original Vintage Exhibitor Magazine (measures 9 1/4" x 12 1/4" [23 x 31 cm]; 24 pages) (Learn More) The Hollywood Reporter, the film entertainment news magazine featuring articles on current projects of the time and much news and information about stars & directors as well as some very cool ads! Amazingly, it was published for many decades, starting in September 3, 1930, and it was published six days a week, 52 weeks a year! Most issues were around 8 pages, with the Saturday issue usually being 4 pages, but sometimes studios would take out four, eight, twelve page or larger ads that would make individual issues much bigger. Also, once a year, this film industry standard did a special "anniversary issue" that was hundreds of pages long. Everybody who was anybody in the business was compelled to take out an ad, and your standing in the industry was judged by how big an ad you took out! There were two daily publications like this, the other being Variety, and they were highly competitive with each other. In 2007, this magazine surpassed The Hollywood Reporter in total distribution, making it the number one entertainment daily (initially, it solely focused on Hollywood, but over the years, it expanded to include all forms of entertainment). Note that because this was a daily paper, the vast majority of people threw it away, just as they did all daily newspapers. Finding any issues of this from decades ago is incredibly difficult, and finding a specific issue is like finding a needle in a haystack, because it seems that nobody saved them! Important Added Info: Note that this is a very special issue of The Hollywood Reporter, because instead of solely being a low number of black and white pages, it also contains the 20-page Paramount 1932-33 campaign book (and we have only ever auctioned one example of this campaign book, and that might have been, like this, an issue of The Hollywood Reporter, that had the excess four pages removed; see below). IMPORTANT! The studios would send copies of campaign books to many theater owners, and it appears that very few examples have survived. IN ADDITION TO SENDING THEM TO THEATER OWNERS, THEY WOULD SOMETIMES HAVE AN EXTRA PRINT RUN OF THE INTERIOR PAGES RUN OFF, WHICH WOULD BE THEN SENT TO AN EXHIBITOR MAGAZINE AND INCLUDED AS AN ADDITION TO A REGULAR ISSUE OF THAT MAGAZINE! I have seen many examples where people carefully removed ALL of the portions of the magazine (the front and back cover plus the non-campaign book interior pages), and they have then sold the remaining material as a "campaign book", which it basically is (and could be done with this magazine!), but realize that it is from the over-run that was created so that it could be included in the magazine. Please do not bid on this item unless you have read the above very carefully, and realize you are getting a magazine containing a campaign book, and not the bound campaign book that was created in a separate print run (and of course, you are receiving more material than just the campaign book!). In the case of this magazine, it contains the Paramount 1932-1933, the 1932 Paramount campaign book ("Paramount... the grand old rock of show business becomes a blazing volcano of hits!") sent to theater owners to encourage them to show Paramount movies. This book has 20 full-color pages that are each elaborately illustrated ads for movies Paramount was going to release in the end of 1932 or the beginning of 1933. Paramount released a larger version of this with pages that measured 11 1/2" x 17" and 112 total pages. If anyone knows more about any of this, please e-mail us and we will post it here. This book has some of the nicest trade ads from the 1930s we have ever seen, including a wonderful one for Marlene Dietrich in Blonde Venus, where she is made to resemble the Venus de Milo statue, plus there are ads for Horse Feathers (spelled "Horsefeathers" in the ad), Love Me Tonight, Movie Crazy, and more! Condition: very good. There is some tiny paper loss at the spine on the back cover and a few tiny tears and tiny bits of paper loss around the edges of the front cover, but the interior (which is the campaign book) is in nice condition!
