A 1948 Realart Re-Release Theatrical Linenbacked Movie Lobby Card #2 (LC; measures 11" x 14" [28 x 36 cm]) (Learn More) Edgar Allan Poe's Murders in the Rue Morgue, the 1932 Robert Florey Universal crime horror mystery thriller ("The Super Shocker"; "Based on the Edgar Allan Poe's Murders in the Rue Morgue"; set in Paris) starring Bela Lugosi (billed as "Dracula himself"; as Dr. Mirakle), Sidney Fox (billed as "Star of 'Strictly Dishonorable'"), Leon Ames (billed as "Leon Waycoff"), Bert Roach, Brandon Hurst, Noble Johnson (as Janos, The Black One), D'arcy Corrigan, Arlene Francis, Iron Eyes Cody, Joe Bonomo (famous early strongman, as one of the gorillas, and he also played a gorilla in 1929's "King of the Kongo"!), and Charles Gemora (as Erik the Gorilla; and amazingly, he reprised this role when the movie was remade by Warner Bros in 1954, 22 years later!). Note that this movie is considered to have been the consolation prize for Florey and Lugosi after they were replaced as director and star on "Frankenstein" by Universal. Note that starting in 1929 and continuing into the 1940s, Charles Gemora played gorillas in many movies, likely because he owned a gorilla suit, and could do a somewhat convincing job portraying a gorilla. Just a few years later, Ray 'Crash' Corrigan would also start playing gorillas, and no doubt they competed for roles in every movie requiring a gorilla! Important Added Info: Note that we have a scan of both the front and the back of this lobby card, which should greatly help you see what defects it has. What IS linenbacking? Learn More Overall Condition and Pre-Restoration Defects with Quality of Restoration: good to very good. The lobby card had small tears and small surface paper loss in the lower left border and scattered in the bottom border, with a 1/2" tear in the left of the bottom border. It had surface paper loss in the top center of the credits area extending into the "G" of "LUGOSI". It had a 3" horizontal scratch going through the girl's body, with a 1" scratch above the right of it, in the building. Overall, the lobby card was in good condition prior to linenbacking. Someone linenbacked the card with no excess around the edges and performed slight restoration to the border defects, but left the defects within the image alone (any restorer could perform additional restoration without re-backing the card, or it certainly could be displayed as it is.
