An Original Vintage Paperbacked German Stage Play Poster (measures 27 1/2" x 37 1/2" [70 x 95 cm]) (Learn More) Linden-Cabaret, the 1920 German post-World War I (WWI) poster announcing the musical stage productions which were to be held at the Linden-Cabaret in Berlin, Germany. The show was directed by Heinz Fuss and the entertainers included Sean Moreau, Celly de Rheidt, Lala Herdmaenger and Sebastian Droste. The Linden-Cabaret was located on the Unter den Linden boulevard in Berlin (which was named after the linden [lime] trees that line the road, linking numerous Berlin sights, landmarks and rivers for sightseeing). Note that this poster features art of four people starring at a man in a top hat and smoking a cigarette. Note that the Golden Twenties was a period of economic growth, expansion of liberal values, and an increase in experimental/creative efforts in the field of art from 1923 to 1929 in Germany. However, this poster was created during the grim and chaotic times of post-war Germany with its record-breaking levels of inflation and severe food shortages. While it may seem odd to promote a cabaret (especially with a poster featuring art of carefree people in festive and fancy clothing), a German expert tells us that some dealt with this upheaval by "experiencing life to its fullest" and this poster certainly reflects that! Artist: Michael Important Added Info: Note that this poster has been paperbacked. What is paperbacking? This means the poster was backed onto a light paper backing (acid-free), that is similar in feel to that of the original poster (it means that the poster must be handled carefully, as the backing does not give it much added strength, but it is similar to having an unrestored poster, and yet it has been properly preserved). It is a similar process to linenbacking, except that most collectors use linenbacking for one-sheets and paperbacking for half-sheets, inserts, window cards. What IS paperbacking? Learn More Overall Condition and Pre-Restoration Defects with Quality of Restoration: good to very good. Prior to paperbacking, the poster had some scuffs on the middle vertical fold, with some tiny bits of paper loss on parts of other folds. It had darkening and just a few small tears in the borders. Overall, the poster was in very good condition prior to paperbacking. Someone mounted the poster onto a thin paper backing with no restoration. It was roughly handled, and it has paper loss in the middle of the left excess area that caused a small tear in the left blank border of the poster. It also had paper loss in the right of the bottom excess paper, which caused a 1 1/2" tear in the poster, and someone put a piece of tape on the back of that area. The poster can certainly be displayed as it is, or one could have it removed from the thin paper and re-backed. Learn More about condition grades
