A 1948 Re-Release Theatrical Movie Lobby Card #8 (LC; measures 11" x 14" [28 x 36 cm]) (Learn More) A Night at the Opera, the classic 1935 Sam Wood screwball musical opera romantic comedy starring the Marx Brothers (Groucho Marx as Otis B. Driftwood, Chico Marx as Fiorello, and Harpo Marx as Tomasso), Kitty Carlisle (as Rosa Castaldi), Allan Jones (as Ricardo Baroni), Walter Woolf King (billed as "Walter King"; as Rodolfo Lassparri), Sig Ruman (as Herbert Gottlieb), and Margaret Dumont (as Mrs. Claypool). Note that MGM added a romantic plot to the Marx Bros. typical screwball comedy, and it really adds to the movie, as Carlisle and Jones have real chemistry together, and their songs are excellent. Of course, this is also the movie that has the Marx Bros.' most famous comedy scene, the "stateroom" scene, plus the great scene of Groucho and Chico attempting to sign a contract! NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. Important Added Info: Note that the scene on this 1948 re-release lobby card (made just 13 years after the first release) shows the classic "stateroom scene" from this movie. The same scene appears on an original 1935 card, and that card costs a fortune, making this card a very attractive alternative. Note that the card says "AN MGM MASTERPIECE REPRINT" at bottom right. This was a terminology used by MGM at this time for some re-releases, and it has caused some collectors to be confused! This card is an original card from the 1948 re-release of this movie, and is NOT a "reprint"! Also note that we have a scan of both the front and the back of this lobby card, which should greatly help you see what defects it has. Condition: good. Some theater stenciled the card with "AN M-G-M SILVER ANNIVERSARY PICTURE" in silver letters across the top and bottom of the image (this was done on a lot of 1948 and 1949 lobby cards, and the stencil was likely provided by MGM to theaters). The card was used in Australia, and there is a stenciled rating in the bottom left. There are pinholes in the corners with a tiny tear in the right border. Note that this card is completely unrestored and there is not a single piece of tape on either the front or back! Obviously, one could have this card restored, or it certainly could be displayed and enjoyed as it is. Please read our description above and look at our super-sized images before placing a bid on this card. Learn More about condition grades
