eMoviePoster.comAuction History Result 2z917 BIRDMAN OF ALCATRAZ 1sh '62 Burt Lancaster & John Frankenheimer, Saul Bass-like art! Date Sold 12/8/2016Sold For: Login or Register to see sold price. An Original Vintage Theatrical Folded One-Sheet Movie Poster (1sh; measures 27" x 41" [69 x 104 cm]) (Learn More) Birdman of Alcatraz (released in other English-speaking countries as "The Man of Alcatraz"), the classic 1962 John Frankenheimer Kansas Leavenworth prison convict crime biography melodrama ("Inside the rock called Alcatraz they tried to chain a volcano they called 'The Bird Man'!"; "Based on the book by Tom Gaddis"; the true story of double murderer Robert Stroud, sentenced to life in prison, who, after years of anger, adopts a baby bird, and ends up becoming one of the world's foremost bird experts, all done while serving his life sentence in Leavenworth Prison) starring Burt Lancaster (nominated for the Best Actor Academy Award for this film; in the title role as Robert Franklin Stroud), Karl Malden, Thelma Ritter (nominated for the Best Supporting Actress Academy Award for this film), Neville Brand, Edmond O'Brien ("as Tom Gaddis"), Betty Field, and Telly Savalas (nominated for the Best Supporting Actor Academy Award for this film; billed as "Tony Savalas"). Note that if you only knew of Robert Stroud from this movie, you would think him a pretty saintly man who made a few youthful mistakes and suffered the rest of his life because of a system that refused to forgive him. But actually, that is a fiction that was created for the film. If you are interested in knowing more, you can easily look up his real life story, which is far more complicated and depressing than how it was presented in the movie. NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. If you know who did the art (if any), please let us know. Important Added Info: Note that many people have credited the art on this poster to Saul Bass, and it certainly IS "in the Saul Bass style". While there are many, many websites that have this poster credited to Saul Bass, we think it is the work of another artist. This was confirmed by a collector who created an exhibition of Bass art, and was told by Saul's daughter that this poster was not created by her father. In the case of this movie, we know that Bob Peak did the art for the window card (because it is signed by him!), and of course, that is not in the style Peak is known for. If anyone knows more about this, please e-mail us and we will post it here. Note that all but 28 of the folded one-sheets in this Part I of eMoviePoster.com's December Major Auction were consigned to us by legendary French dealer/collector Dominique Besson. Dominique Besson started collecting movie posters in 1981, and became a dealer in French and European posters in 1994, and has remained as a top dealer ever since! But in addition, 30 years ago, Dominique began collecting U.S. one-sheets, first those with Saul Bass art, and then adding Alfred Hitchcock posters, then Humphrey Bogart, and he finally ended up collecting in an amazing total of 47 different categories, purchasing the posters from all over the world! Now the time has come to sell this wonderful collection, and Dominique has chosen eMoviePoster.com to do so, through our auctions! As noted above, all but 28 of the folded one-sheets in this Part I come from this more remarkable collection (the 28 that do not were consigned to us by other collectors, and are clearly marked). This is not all of the Dominique Besson collection we are auctioning. In addition, there are approximately 200 more folded one-sheets that will be in Part IV of this special auction (ones from the 1970s to present), and there are approximately 100 unfolded one-sheets that will be in Part III (including many great ones). This is a very rare opportunity to purchase folded one-sheets (all of which have had no professional restoration) from one of the greatest one-sheet collections assembled! Note that this one-sheet is from the category that Dominique Besson collected on that he labeled "Saul Bass". Condition: good to very good. There is some fold and border wear and there are a few small tears and creases along parts of the lower horizontal fold. It is otherwise in generally nice condition. Learn More about condition grades
