An Original Vintage Theatrical Unfolded Window Card Movie Poster (WC; measures 14" x 18" [36 x 46 cm]) (Learn More) Two-Faced Woman, the 1941 George Cukor romantic deception screwball comedy ("Go Gay with Garbo!"; "When rivals meet... Face to face!"; about a woman who fears she is losing her husband, so she poses as her twin sister with a different outgoing personality, in a strange attempt to win her husband back!) starring Greta Garbo ("Her first picture since 'Ninotchka'"), Melvyn Douglas, Constance Bennett, Roland Young, Robert Sterling, Ruth Gordon, and Robert Alton. Note that after 15 years of major success in romantic melodramas, MGM wanted to change Garbo's image (likely because with the onset of the U.S. involvement in World War II, they could not distribute their movies widely in Europe, where Garbo had the greatest appeal). They had the disastrous idea of putting her in a screwball romantic comedy. Had it had a wonderful script by Samson Raphaelson, and directed by Ernst Lubitsch, it might have worked well, but instead it had a really not-well-thought-out script that seemed more suited to a B-movie. It did terribly at the box office, and Miss Garbo completely retired from movies, and never made another! NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. If you know who did the art (if any), please let us know. Important Added Info: Note that the card measures very slightly under 14" wide (an extremely tiny amount!) and has no left, right, or bottom blank borders, but it has NOT been trimmed (this was done at a time when MGM was experimenting with having as few borders as possible). The window card originally had a blank top that was neatly trimmed off (this was commonly done with window cards, when the top had been left blank, or when someone had hand-scrawled play date information in that area). Most collectors do not consider it to be a significant defect at all, since only blank white paper is lost, and the window card becomes easier to frame. Also note that this window card was never folded. Often window cards would be folded across the middle, because that would make them 11" x 14", and they could then be sent with standard folded posters. Most collectors put an added value on a window card that has never been folded. Condition: good. It looks like the left border of the card is improperly trimmed, because there is excess to the left of the bottom of Garbo's hand, and also excess to the left of her hair (this was at the time MGM was experimenting with "full-bleed" borders, and it appears that in this case the person in charge of trimming trimmed the card to 14" wide, not realizing it was intended to be slightly under that). This could be easily corrected by slightly trimming the left border to the edge of the image. Someone defaced the word "RUTH" before Ruth Gordon's credit at bottom right. There are some faint dot stains scattered in the background areas. In spite of the above defects, I still think the card will display well, but please do not bid on the card unless you can accept the defects described above. Learn More about condition grades
