An Original Vintage Theatrical Linenbacked Japanese Movie Poster (measures 18" x 25 1/4" [46 x 64 cm]) (Learn More) Shichinin No Samurai (released in the U.S. in 1956 as "The Magnificent Seven", and in other English-speaking countries as "The Seven Samurai"), the classic 1954 Akira Kurosawa Japanese hired-professionals-save-a-tiny-town action epic (this great movie was the basis for the equally classic "The Magnificent Seven", it won the New York Film Critics award and was nominated for two Oscars!) starring Toshiro Mifune, Takashi Shimura, Seiji Miyaguchi, Yoshio Inaba, and Minoru Chiaki. Note that this film was first released in the U.S. under the title "The Magnificent Seven". We're not sure when the U.S. title was changed to the now familiar "The Seven Samurai", but it was certainly before the 1960 "The Magnificent Seven" was released (we have found newspaper ads from 1957 that still use the original title). NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. If you know who did the art (if any), please let us know. Important Added Info: This poster is from the 1954 roadshow release of this movie in Japan, and it has a blank bottom area (similar to the blank top area found on U.S. window cards). A theater wrote its specific information in that area, and that bottom area is intact. Often, when these posters would be later used by a different theater, that bottom blank area would be trimmed off (Japanese posters of this size are often found with this trimming). But this example of the poster does NOT have that area trimmed, which is rare (we only previously auctioned this poster one time, and that example had the bottom area trimmed off, and it auctioned for $925). What IS linenbacking? Learn More Overall Condition and Pre-Restoration Defects with Quality of Restoration: very good. The poster had two horizontal folds and there were small tears and tiny areas of paper loss in the top horizontal fold, and small paper loss in the left end of the lower horizontal fold, with a few pinholes and tiny areas of paper loss around the edges. Overall, the poster was in good to very good condition prior to linenbacking. The poster was really expertly restored, and it displays wonderfully! Learn More about condition grades
