An Original Vintage Theatrical Linenbacked Australian Daybill Movie Poster (db; measures 14 1/2" x 40" [37 x 102 cm]) (Learn More) The Eagle of the Sea, the 1926 Frank Lloyd silent swashbuckling pirate action adventure thriller ("From the novel 'Captain Sazarac' by James Tenney Jackson"; about the notorious pirate Jean Lafitte, who, in the days of General Andrew Jackson, disguises himself as a naval officer and has many adventures) starring Florence Vidor, Ricardo Cortez (as Captain Sazarac aka Jean Lafitte), Sam De Grasse, George Beranger, Mitchell Lewis, Guy Oliver, George Irving (as General Andrew Jackson), and Boris Karloff (in an uncredited role as a pirate!). Note that while there is no official connection between the two movies, Cecil B. DeMille's "The Buccaneer" (first made in 1938, and then remade by DeMille in 1958) covers the same ground as this movie. Note that this is a "lost" film, which means that no surviving copies are thought to exist. NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. Artist: Richardson Studio Important Added Info: Note that we have only previously auctioned one example of this Australian daybill, and that was 10 years ago. The buyer of that poster had it linenbacked and has now reconsigned it to us, so this is still the only example we have ever auctioned! Note that this is one of an amazing collection of 62 linenbacked Australian daybills that all have great art from Richardson Studio (or John Richardson, before he became "Richardson Studio"!), which many collectors feel have the best art and design of any Australian daybills, and are highly sought after by collectors. These were accumulated by a very dedicated collector over many years, and they are now being all offered at once (in 62 separate auctions), so this is a wonderful opportunity to obtain one or many of these daybills, many of which rarely are offered for sale or at auction. What IS linenbacking? Learn More Overall Condition and Pre-Restoration Defects with Quality of Restoration: good to very good. The poster had a number of scuffs in the letters of the title, with scuffs in the yellow background area at middle left. It had a stain in the bottom right corner and pinholes in the corners. Overall, the poster was in good to very good condition prior to linenbacking. The restorer backed the poster "in the European style", meaning that they did not do restoration to the defects described above. Learn More about condition grades
