Date Sold 12/20/2018Sold For: Login or Register to see sold price. 8 Original Vintage Theatrical Movie Lobby Cards (LCs; measure 11" x 14" [28 x 36 cm]) (Learn More) The Jade Mask, the 1945 Phil Rosen Asian detective mystery crime thriller ("Original Screenplay by George Callahan"; "Suggested by Earl Derr Biggers character") starring Sidney Toler ("as Charlie Chan"), Mantan Moreland, Edwin Luke (as Eddie Chan), Hardie Albright, Frank Reicher, Janet Warren, and Al Bridge. Note that the very first Charlie Chan movie was "House Without a Key" in 1925, with George Kuwa as Chan. In 1927, "The Chinese Parrot" (directed by Paul Leni) starred Sojin Kamiyama as Chan. In 1929 came the third movie, "Behind That Curtain", starring E.L. Park as Charlie Chan. 1931 brought "Charlie Chan Carries On", starring Warner Oland in the first of many movies with him as the Asian detective, and he was later replaced by Sidney Toler and then Roland Winters (there would ultimately be 47 Charlie Chan movies!). Of course, Charlie Chan is one of the most memorable literary creations ever, from author Earl Derr Biggers, but because politically correct-minded people have viewed the character as outdated, the movies are rarely shown, which is a shame! Important Added Info: Note that this a very rare complete set of lobby cards for this movie (we have never auctioned a complete set of cards for this title in all of our years of auctioning!) Condition: good to very good. Most of the cards have some tiny pinholes around the edges and varying amounts of light scuff marks and smudges in the image area, typical of vintage lobby cards that were likely displayed at a theater. The card with Moreland looking into the mirror has some light staining at lower right and a small blank border tear at lower right that has been repaired with tape from the back. The title card has a few pinholes around the edges and some tiny tears and creases along portions of the left blank border that have been repaired with tape from the back. It and one other card have pieces of tape on the back that were not put there for any restoration purpose, typical of vintage lobby cards. Overall the rare complete set is in pretty nice condition and please see our super-sized image to get a good sense of the condition of this item prior to placing a bid.
