Date Sold 6/15/2017Sold For: Login or Register to see sold price. An Original Vintage Theatrical Linenbacked One-Sheet Movie Poster (1sh; measures 27" x 41" [69 x 104 cm]) (Learn More) House of Frankenstein, the 1944 Erle C. Kenton Universal monster horror thriller ("All together...!"; "Frankenstein's Monster! The Wolf Man! Dracula! The Hunchback! The Mad Doctor!"; "Based on a Story by Curt Siodmak"; the sixth Universal Frankenstein movie, and this was the first "all-star" movie, with all of its best monsters brought together in a single movie!) starring Boris Karloff, Lon Chaney Jr. (as Lawrence Talbot, the Wolfman), John Carradine (as Dracula), J. Carroll Naish (as Daniel, the hunchback), Anne Gwynne, Peter Coe, Elena Verdugo, Lionel Atwill (Atwill must have had a terrible agent that he ended up behind Peter Coe, and Elena Verdugo in the billing!), Michael Mark, Frank Reicher, Charles Wagenheim, William Edmunds, Belle Mitchell, Sig Ruman, and Glenn Strange (as "Frankenstein's monster"). At least Atwill did better than poor Glenn Strange, who played the Frankenstein monster, and didn't even receive billing! Also, is it just me, or is it the height of insensitivity that a "hunchback" was treated as a monster on a par with Frankenstein, Dracula, and The Wolf Man? Also, why in the world did Glenn Strange not get billing on the posters? NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. If you know who did the art (if any), please let us know. Important Added Info: Note that this is a rare poster that we have only auctioned once, and that was 24 years ago! Likely the rarity of the poster is because the movie had a 1950 re-release, and that quick re-release likely caused the original paper to be used up or destroyed. What IS linenbacking? Learn More Overall Condition and Pre-Restoration Defects with Quality of Restoration: good. The poster had tears and tiny bits of paper loss scattered down the center of the poster, with paper loss at the bottom two crossfolds. There was a lesser number of tears along the horizontal folds, although there were creases, tears, and tiny paper loss scattered in the 1" below the bottom horizontal fold. There were pinholes, tears, and paper loss around the edges of the poster. Overall, the poster was in fair to good condition prior to linenbacking. The poster was pretty well backed many years ago with no excess linen, and the restorer did not want to use lots of restoration paint, so you can still clearly see signs of the above defects and the restoration of the above defects. If you are the sort of person who does not mind that you can tell that a poster is nearly 75 years old and was used in a theater, then you will likely be happy to display this poster! If you want your posters to look "perfect", then you would surely want to have this poster re-backed (which certainly could be done). Please look closely at our super-sized image and read what is written above before bidding on this poster. Learn More about condition grades
