Date Sold 8/4/2024Sold For: Login or Register to see sold price. An Original Vintage Theatrical Linenbacked One-Sheet Movie Poster (1sh; measures 27" x 41" [69 x 104 cm]) (Learn More) The Son of the Sheik, the 1926 George Fitzmaurice Arabian silent desert romantic adventure melodrama sequel ("Hail now! 'The Son of the Sheik'"; "A sequel to 'The Sheik'"; "From the novel by E.M. Hull - Adapted to the screen by Frances Marion"; the son has his way with a dancing girl, and her father captures him and tortures him as payback) starring Rudolph Valentino (in a dual title role as both Sheik Ahmed Ben Hassan and Ahmed, the Sheik's son; in his final movie role!), Vilma Banky (as Yasmin), George Fawcett, Montagu Love, and Karl Dane. Note that this movie was a sequel to Valentino's wildly successful 1920 "The Sheik". Unfortunately, he passed away when filming was completed, and it was not released until after his death. NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. If you know who did the art (if any), please let us know. Important Added Info: Note that we have only previously auctioned one example of this 1926 first release one-sheet, and that was 28 years ago, when it sold for $10,925! We have not auctioned this poster again since 1996, but another auction house auctioned an example of this poster in 2020, and it sold for $120,000! It may be many, many years before we auction this poster again. What IS linenbacking? Learn More Overall Condition and Pre-Restoration Defects with Quality of Restoration: very good. The poster had a triangular area of paper loss at the middle crossfold (measuring 2" high by 2" wide, connected diagonally from the widest points) that slightly affected Banky's fingers and part of Valentino's belt above that. It also had paper loss in the bottom right corner that slightly affected the litho mark, and it had paper loss in the lower right blank border that only affected blank white paper. It had paper loss in the center of the bottom border that was solely blank white paper. Other than these defects, the poster was in generally nice condition prior to linenbacking, and the colors were bright and fresh. The poster was really expertly backed and the above defects were repaired by a top professional, and it displays really well (I would say that most people would not realize there was the paper loss at the center, even when staring directly at it)!
