An Original Vintage Theatrical Linenbacked Half-Sheet Movie Poster (1/2sh; measures 22" x 28" [56 x 71 cm]) (Learn More) The Grapes of Wrath, the classic 1940 John Ford (winner of the Best Director Academy Award for this film) Depression era family-leaves-the-Dust-Bowl-to-find-a-better-life-in-California melodrama (nominated for the Best Picture Academy Award; based on the classic novel by John Steinbeck; produced by Darryl F. Zanuck) starring Henry Fonda (nominated for the Best Actor Academy Award for this film; as Tom Joad), Jane Darwell (winner of the Best Supporting Actress Academy Award for this film; as Ma Joad), Charley Grapewin (as Grandpa Joad), Russell Simpson (as Pa Joad), John Carradine (as Jim Casy), Dorris Bowdon (as Rose-of-Sharon Rivers, spelled as "Rosasharn" in the movie credits), Zeffie Tilbury (as Grandma Joad), Frank Darien (as Uncle John Joad), Eddie Quillan (as Connie Rivers), John Qualen (as Muley Graves), Kitty McHugh (as the diner waitress, in one of the movie's most poignant scenes), Darryl Hickman (as Winfield Joad), and Shirley Mills (as Ruthie Joad). Note that this is one of the very rare cases where a really great book is turned into a really great movie! It is not entirely faithful to the book, but it certainly captures the "spirit" of the book. NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. If you know who did the art (if any), please let us know. Important Added Info: Note that both of the one-sheets for this classic movie are somewhat disappointing, with little color and mostly artwork that does not depict the characters from the movie. But this great half-sheet (which we have never seen or sold before) has a wonderful "line up" image of the stars in character, looking as people worn down by The Great Depression would surely pose in such a portrait! We have only previously auctioned one example of this half-sheet, and that was 10 years ago, when it sold for $1,950! What IS linenbacking? Learn More Overall Condition and Pre-Restoration Defects with Quality of Restoration: good. The poster was folded and it had creases along both folds, with some surface paper loss in the bottom of the vertical fold. It had many pinholes, tears, and tape stains around the edges, with a long tear in the upper left going through the "WR". Someone put a thin line of white paint in the center of each letter of "GRAPES". Overall, the poster was in good condition prior to linenbacking. If I owned this great poster, I would immediately have it removed from the old linen and properly re-backed. It would require some paint restoration in the title, but very little in the image, and after proper restoration, it will display wonderfully! Learn More about condition grades
