An Original Vintage Theatrical Folded Style B Half-Sheet Movie Poster (1/2sh; measures 22" x 28" [56 x 71 cm]) (Learn More) The Asphalt Jungle, the classic 1950 John Huston (nominated for the Best Director Academy Award for this film) crime film noir ("MGM presents the story of the city under the city."; "From a novel by W.R. Burnett"; about a "perfect robbery" with a team of top professionals, but of course, everything unravels, partially through double-crosses; perhaps the best movie of its kind!) starring Sterling Hayden, Louis Calhern, Jean Hagen, James Whitmore, Sam Jaffe (nominated for the Best Supporting Actor Academy Award for this film), John McIntire, Marilyn Monroe, Marc Lawrence, Barry Kelley, Anthony Caruso, Teresa Celli, Brad Dexter, Don Haggerty, and Daniel Clarke NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. If you know who did the art (if any), please let us know. Important Added Info: Note that we have only previously auctioned two examples of this 1950 first release style B half-sheet (with great images of Marilyn Monroe), and only one in the last 21 years! Note that Marilyn Monroe was a virtual unknown when this classic film noir movie was first released in 1950, and did not even receive billing on any of the posters. The primary ad campaign for this movie was a text only poster, with the words "THE ASPHALT JUNGLE", with the tagline "THE CITY UNDER THE CITY", written in a cool font and design (the one-sheet has no image whatsoever). Yet, the poster designers recognized the value of having a sexy woman's image in some of the advertising (most notably the six-sheet and insert, but the best poster of all is this rare style B half-sheet, where Monroe absolutely dominates the poster, both in the center and in a side image!), but she does not appear at all on most of the other posters. In 1954, the movie received a full-scale re-release, and MGM billed Marilyn Monroe as though she was a major star of the movie! Also note that this poster was folded at one time but has been laying flat for a long time and will be sent rolled in a tube. Note that this poster was once folded, and if it can be refolded without damaging it or bringing back the creases, we are willing to do so, but because it is old and somewhat fragile, we would much prefer to send it in a large flat package, and we don't want to roll it, because that would have an excellent chance of damaging it. We will only send it rolled if the new owner accepts responsibility if it is damaged from being rolled. Please bear all this in mind before placing your bid on this rare poster. Condition: good to very good. The poster has approximately 5" of separation along the lower vertical foldline edge and that area and some tiny paper loss at the center crossfold are backed by tape. The separation and some creases and tiny scuffs in Monroe's dress have been slightly touched up. There are some pinholes around the edges and the right edge of the poster was once folded back by approximately 1 1/2". There are stains at lower right and there is some discoloration along the lower center blank border. The rare poster is otherwise "all there" and after paperbacking with some proper restoration it would display well (but see our super-sized image to get a good sense of the condition of this item and bear in mind the cost of restoration prior to placing a bid.)
