A 1938 Re-Release Theatrical Movie Lobby Card (LC; measures 11" x 14" [28 x 36 cm]) (Learn More) Frankenstein, the classic 1931 James Whale Universal monster horror thriller ("The monster that terrorized the world!"; "The Man Who Made a Monster"; "Warning! The monster is loose!"; "Based upon the Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley Story"; "Adapted by John L. Balderston from the play by Peggy Webling"; the first of the Universal "Frankenstein" movies, and regarded as one of the finer movies of any genre, in large part due to the marvelous acting of Boris Karloff, and the marvelous direction of James Whale!) starring Colin Clive (as Dr. Herbert V. Frankenstein), Boris Karloff (as the Frankenstein monster), Edward Van Sloan, Fredric Kerr, Mae Clarke, Dwight Frye (extremely memorable as Fritz), and John Boles NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. Important Added Info: Note that Universal gave this classic monster movie a quick re-release in 1938, just seven years after its original release. It seems likely that this re-release did not play in as nearly as many theaters as the first release, because the 1938 re-release movie paper is at least as scarce as the 1931 originals! Although they printed the cards in two colors to save on money, they wisely used five new monster scenes that were not in the original set, and the title card has a different art image from the original title card. We have been consigned a COMPLETE set of cards from this 1938 re-release, and we are auctioning them in 8 separate auctions! In all our years of auctioning prior to this, we only auctioned four different 1938 re-release cards (and one duplicated one, for five single cards in all). Also note that we have a scan of both the front and the back of this lobby card, which should greatly help you see what defects it has. Condition: good to very good. The person who owned this set of cards apparently purchased the cards at a different times, because the condition of each varies, and some were gel backed and some had slight restoration performed without backing. In the case of this card, it had pinholes around the edges, with two tiny tears in the left border. It had pinholes in the top center sky area, with some tiny paper loss by some of the holes, and a pinhole in the monster's neck and hair, with tiny paper loss above his head. This card was gel backed, which means a talented restorer backed this card onto a gel material and they then performed restoration to the below defects, and then they removed the gel backing, so that the card still exactly looks and feels like an original card (and it is!), with no backing at all. The card displays well, but you can see slight signs of the restoration in the top sky area, especially when looking closely at the card! Learn More about condition grades
