An Original Vintage Theatrical Paperbacked Window Card Movie Poster (WC; measures 14" x 22" [36 x 56 cm]) (Learn More) Mad Love, the 1935 Karl Freund medical doctor transplant romantic love triangle horror thriller ("Dead hands that live... and love... and kill!"; based on the French novel "Les Mains D'Orlac" [The Hands of Orlac] by Maurice Renard; about a mad plastic surgeon who is madly in love with an actress, but she is married to a concert pianist, but then his hands are crushed, and she convinces the plastic surgeon to replace his hands with a "hand transplant", but he uses the hands of an executed murderer, and the transplanted hands have ideas of their own!) starring Peter Lorre, Frances Drake, Colin Clive, Ted Healy (most famous as the person who started The Three Stooges; they were first billed as "Ted Healy and his Stooges"; he let them go on their own, hiring replacement "Stooges", but that did not work out well at all!), Isabel Jewell, Sara Haden, Edward Brophy, Keye Luke, Otto Hoffman, and Henry Kolker. Note that IMDb says that Isabel Jewell, who received fifth billing on the posters, had all of her scenes deleted! NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. If you know who did the art (if any), please let us know. Important Added Info: Note that first release 1935 movie posters from this Peter Lorre horror movie are incredibly rare. We have previously auctioned only window cards from the first release, and never any other poster, lobby card, or still! However, all three of the previous window cards we auctioned were in really lesser condition, and the top tagline area above the title was missing in all three (it was restored on one). This card, which was just discovered, is in significantly better condition than those three, although it had the defects noted below. Also note that the card measures very slightly under 14" x 22" (an extremely tiny amount in each direction!) and has no left, right, or bottom blank borders, but it has NOT been trimmed (this was done at a time when MGM was experimenting with having as few borders as possible). Also note that this poster has been paperbacked. What is paperbacking? This means the poster was backed onto a light paper backing (acid-free), that is similar in feel to that of the original poster (it means that the poster must be handled carefully, as the backing does not give it much added strength, but it is similar to having an unrestored poster, and yet it has been properly preserved). It is a similar process to linenbacking, except that most collectors use linenbacking for one-sheets and paperbacking for half-sheets, inserts, window cards. What IS paperbacking? Learn More Overall Condition and Pre-Restoration Defects with Quality of Restoration: good to very good. Prior to paperbacking, the card had water staining scattered on the back of the bottom one-third. Some of it affected the front of the card, and some of it did not. The most affected area was an oval-shaped stain to the right of the girl's hair going onto Lorre's coat. There was staining in the "RE" of "LORRE", and slightly in the first "R", with staining to the right of it and down through the word "DRAKE" and in the credits below it, but fortunately, only in the left of the girl's hair and not in her face. There was also light staining in all of Ted Healy and Isabel Jewell's credits, and below them down to the bottom border. There was tiny paper loss in the left and right of the bottom border, and the black area below the MGM credit was stained and deteriorated. The top two-thirds of the card had only a 2" tear in the upper left border that extended into the top of the "M" of "MAD" and some light brown staining in the bottom right of the "M" and the lower left of the "A". Overall, the window card was in good condition prior to paperbacking. A really expert restorer paperbacked the card and did minimal restoration to the above defects, expertly removing as much of the stains as possible by chemical means, and then performing paint restoration to the remaining defects, and replacing the exact tiny areas of paper loss described above. From any reasonable viewing distance, the card looks fantastic, and even from close up, you don't get a sense of it being heavily restored, and truthfully, it is not. I am certain the new owner will be thrilled to display this wonderful window card on their wall! And this card is in much better condition than any of the three other cards from this movie we previously auctioned. Learn More about condition grades
