An Original Vintage Theatrical Linenbacked Argentinean Movie Poster (measures approximately 29" x 43") (Learn More) Bernard Shaw's Pygmalion, the classic 1938 Anthony Asquith & Leslie Howard English romantic melodrama ("It's the talk of America!"; "From City Streets to Society Glamour Girl"; nominated for the Best Picture Academy Award; based on the classic play by George Bernard Shaw that "My Fair Lady" was based on, about an upper-class gentleman and his bet that he can teach a lower class girl to speak proper English and thus be taken for a lady; with a screenplay by George Bernard Shaw, a fortunate case of a playwright getting to adapt his own work) starring Leslie Howard (nominated for the Best Actor Academy Award for this film; as Henry Higgins), Wendy Hiller (nominated for the Best Actress Academy Award for this film; as Eliza Doolittle), Wilfrid Lawson (as Alfred Doolittle), Marie Lohr (as Mrs. Higgins), Scott Sunderland (as Colonel George Pickering), Jean Cadell (as Mrs. Pearce), David Tree (as Freddy Eynsford Hill), and Everley Gregg. Note that in 1956, this play/movie was changed into a musical, and it opened on Broadway with Julie Andrews in the lead role, and in 1964, it became a movie starring Audrey Hepburn in the lead role. There were several major differences between Pygmalion and My Fair Lady, mostly to accommodate Rex Harrison, in that he was decades older than his female co-star, and Freddy Eynsford Hill has become a really cool young man (so he can sing a classic song), and that weakened the original play significantly, although it did not stop the musical play and movie from both being gigantic hits! This poster was linenbacked, and one of the following is true: either the poster had very minor defects, and was well backed, OR it had more significant defects, but they were extremely well restored, OR it had some minor defects that were not completely restored, and are somewhat noticeable. You can tell which of the above is the case for this particular poster by reading our "pre-restoration" description and also by looking at our "super-sized" image of the actual poster (we are the only major auction company we know of that gives accurate detailed pre-restoration information about linenbacked posters to our bidders, but we wish everyone did!). The poster had two small holes in the white background area to the left of Shaw's head at top center and two other holes in the white background below the "S" of "SHAW". There was a 1" tear in the right of the middle foldline in the white background to the right of Shaw's head. There were a few creases, tears, and smudges around the edges of the poster.
