Date Sold 7/4/2024Sold For: Login or Register to see sold price. An Original 1948 (from the first release of this movie in Belgium) Vintage Theatrical Folded Belgian Movie Poster (measures 13 3/4" x 18 1/4" [35 x 46 cm]) (Learn More) Return of the Ape Man, the 1944 Philip Rosen fantasy horror thriller ("Original Story and Screenplay by Robert Charles"; in 1943, Monogram had a hit of sorts with "The Ape Man" with Bela Lugosi in the title role; they wanted to make a sequel, but Lugosi likely didn't want to have to wear the ape makeup for an entire additional movie, so instead, they made this movie, which is not really a sequel in any way, except for the title, and in it, two scientists find a caveman frozen in the ice, and they revive him, and decide to transplant a "modern" human brain into his body, and the movie goes downhill from there!) starring Bela Lugosi, John Carradine, Frank Moran (in the title role as the Ape Man), Tod Andrews, Teala Loring, Mary Currier, and George Zucco (who is credited but is not really in the movie). What do we mean that Zucco was "not really in the movie"? He was hired to play the title character, and he shot a few test scenes, but then he got sick, and he was replaced by Frank Moran. But he had signed a contract guaranteeing third billing, and they went ahead and gave him the third billing on the posters! They actually did use a little bit of that test footage in the movie, with him in makeup, so he does kind of appear! He recovered from his illness in time to make the sequel movie to this, "Voodoo Man"! Note that the movie was made in 1943, but was not released until 1944 (no doubt due to George Zucco being replaced). NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. If you know who did the art (if any), please let us know. Important Added Info: Note that we have only auctioned an example of this poster twice before! Also note that this poster has been trimmed and it now measures 13 3/4" x 19 3/4" [35 x 50 cm]. Finally note that this poster was folded at one time but has been laying flat for a long time and will be sent rolled in a tube. Condition: good. The poster is trimmed around the edges and someone used white paint to cover an ink pad stamp on back at upper center. That paint slightly bleeds through to the front and they used the same paint to paint portions of the thin borders (see our image). There are a few tears around the edges that have been repaired with tape from the back that slightly bleeds through to the front. It is otherwise "mostly all there" and after proper restoration the rare poster will display well, but bear in mind the poster's condition and the cost of restoration before bidding on it.
