An Original Vintage Theatrical Linenbacked Belgian Movie Poster (measures 23" x 30 1/4" [58 x 77 cm]) (Learn More) Desire, the 1936 Frank Borzage romantic jewel thief smuggling melodrama ("Together again for the first time since 'Morocco'"; "From a comedy by Hans Szekely and R.A. Stemmle"; about a beautiful jewel thief in Paris who steals a pearl necklace, and who hides them in the luggage of an American engineer going to Spain, and then she must retrieve them from him, and in doing so, she falls in love with him) starring Marlene Dietrich, Gary Cooper, John Halliday, William Frawley, Ernest Cossart, Akim Tamiroff, Alan Mowbray, and Zeffie Tilbury (who had the part of her life at the end of her career, as Grandma in "The Grapes of Wrath") NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. If you know who did the art (if any), please let us know. Important Added Info: Note that this is an extremely rare "pre-War" Belgian poster. Prior to World War II, Belgian posters were much larger than the ones from after the war, and they are extremely rare (because during WWII, there was a massive paper shortage in Belgium, and they took virtually every poster and map, and printed new posters on the backs of them!). It would seem extremely likely that this poster has been trimmed, because it likely had a blank top area, but not only have we never auctioned it before, but we also could not find an image of another example to compare it to. It measures 23" x 30 1/4" [58 x 77 cm]. What IS linenbacking? Learn More Overall Condition and Pre-Restoration Defects with Quality of Restoration: good to very good. The poster likely originally had a blank top that was neatly trimmed off (see above). It had minor wear on the folds, with a few faint scuffs in the background areas. It likely had a tax stamp in Dietrich's forehead and another in the bottom right below the word "Desire". It appears that someone removed the stamp from Dietrich's forehead, but that they cut out the area at the bottom right (which was in the blank background). Overall, the poster was in good condition prior to linenbacking. This extremely rare poster was nicely backed. A piece of blank paper was inserted into the cut out area in the bottom right blank background, and touch up was done to Dietrich's forehead. It is slightly noticeable, but the poster still displays really well. Learn More about condition grades
